| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the |
3 |
| State of Illinois wish to congratulate Cedarhurst Center for |
4 |
| the Arts on the occasion of its thirtieth anniversary; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, Cedarhurst Center for the Arts, located in Mt. |
6 |
| Vernon, opened on November 2, 1973; Southern Illinois |
7 |
| philanthropists John and Eleanor Mitchell founded Cedarhurst |
8 |
| and bequeathed their entire estate, including an outstanding |
9 |
| American painting collection, for the enjoyment of residents |
10 |
| and visitors throughout the region; and |
11 |
| WHEREAS, The Center includes Cedarhurst Sculpture Park, |
12 |
| the museum's outdoor gallery with over 60 large-scale |
13 |
| sculptures, and the Mitchell Museum, which houses contemporary |
14 |
| art exhibitions in two galleries, including the Children's |
15 |
| Gallery; the permanent collection of Cedarhurst includes works |
16 |
| by John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassatt, George Bellows, Thomas |
17 |
| Eakins, William Glackens, Robert Henri, Arthur B. Davies, J. |
18 |
| Alden Weir, Maurice Predergast, Childe Hassam, and George Luks, |
19 |
| among others; and |
20 |
| WHEREAS, The museum works closely with educators to |
21 |
| coordinate and integrate arts education programs with school |
22 |
| curriculum; tours for gallery exhibitions and Cedarhurst |
23 |
| Sculpture Park are available for both children and adults and |
24 |
| are conducted by docents and staff; hands-on activities are |
25 |
| available for students during the school year and are comprised |
26 |
| of a tour and art-related activity; the center offers art |
27 |
| classes and workshops such as basketry, china painting, clay, |
28 |
| drawing, watercolor, stained glass, and weaving; the museum |
29 |
| also sponsors a Craft Fair and a chamber music series; |
