HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the
3 State of Illinois recognize Narendra Jaggi, professor of
4 physics at Illinois Wesleyan University, on being named the
5 2003 Illinois Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation
6 for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement
7 and Support of Education (CASE); and
 
8     WHEREAS, Professor Jaggi, a member of the Illinois Wesleyan
9 faculty since 1991, is among winners in 43 states; CASE
10 assembled two preliminary panels of judges to select finalists,
11 and the Carnegie Foundation then convened the third and final
12 panel, which selected four national winners and the state
13 winners; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Professor Jaggi was educated in his native India,
15 receiving degrees in physics from Ranchi University and from
16 the University of Bombay where he earned a Ph.D.; after working
17 in the Department of Atomic Energy in Bombay, he pursued a
18 postdoctoral fellowship at Northwestern University, then
19 joined the physics department at Northeastern University in
20 Boston before going to Illinois Wesleyan; and
 
21     WHEREAS, In addition to his teaching and research,
22 Professor Jaggi is co-founder of the Sports and Scholars
23 Program, a summer academic enrichment experience that has been
24 recognized as a model for exemplifying
25 "university-industry-community" cooperation; his engaging
26 classroom style and his involvement in numerous campus
27 activities led to his selection by Illinois Wesleyan's Student
28 Senate as the University's Professor of the Year for 2002-2003;
29 and
 
30     WHEREAS, The Professor of the Year panel made its decision
31 based on five criteria: extraordinary dedication to

1 undergraduate teaching; impact on and involvement with
2 undergraduate students; scholarly approach to teaching and
3 learning; contribution to undergraduate education in the
4 institution, community, and profession; and support from
5 colleagues and current and former students; and
 
6     WHEREAS, The announcement of the award was made on November
7 13, 2003 in Washington, D.C., at a ceremony at the National
8 Press Club; therefore, be it
 
9     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
10 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
11 congratulate Professor Narendra Jaggi on being named the 2003
12 Illinois Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for
13 the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and
14 Support of Education (CASE) and commend him for his dedication
15 to his profession; and be it further
 
16     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17 presented to Professor Narendra Jaggi as an expression of our
18 respect and esteem.
