 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Nick Holonyak,
 3    Jr.,  Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the
 4    University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign  and  resident  of
 5    Urbana, has been awarded a 2002 National Medal of Technology;
 6    and

 7        WHEREAS, Professor Holonyak earned a bachelor's degree in
 8    1950, his master's degree in 1951, and his doctorate in 1954,
 9    all from the University of Illinois; and

10        WHEREAS,  Professor Holonyak has made major contributions
11    throughout his career in electrical  engineering  technology;
12    he  was  the  inventor  of the first practical light-emitting
13    diode and  the  first  semiconductor  laser  in  the  visible
14    spectrum; and

15        WHEREAS,  Professor  Holonyak  has  achieved many honors,
16    including receiving the National Medal of  Science  in  1990,
17    the  Japan  Prize  in  1995,  and  the  2003  Electrical  and
18    Electronics Engineers Medal of Honor; Professor Holonyak is a
19    member  of  the  National  Academy  of Engineering and of the
20    National Academy of Sciences and is a foreign member  of  the
21    Russian Academy of Sciences; therefore, be it

22        RESOLVED,   BY   THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES  OF  THE
23    NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS,  that
24    we   congratulate   Professor   of  Electrical  and  Computer
25    Engineering Nick Holonyak, Jr.  on  the  recognition  of  his
26    important  scientific  contributions  and  his receipt of the
27    2002 National Medal of Technology; and be it further

28        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
29    presented to Professor Holonyak as a token of our respect and
30    esteem.
