 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, The members of the House of  Representatives  of
 3    the  State  of  Illinois were shocked and saddened to hear of
 4    the untimely death of Lance Corporal  Jakub  Henryk  Kowalik,
 5    United States Marine Corps, of Schaumburg, on Monday, May 12,
 6    2003, in Iraq; and

 7        WHEREAS,  Lance Corporal Kowalik had been assigned to the
 8    1st Maintenance Battalion of the 1st Service  Support  Group,
 9    which  was  based at Camp Pendleton, since August of 2002; he
10    served  as  an  assault  amphibious  vehicle   repairer   and
11    technician;  he  joined  the  United  States  Marine Corps in
12    December of 2001; and

13        WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Kowalik was a native  of  Poland,
14    born to Henryk and Danuta Kowalik; the family migrated to the
15    United  States  in 1992, first living in Chicago, then moving
16    to Niles and recently to Schaumburg; he was a  2001  graduate
17    of  Maine  West  High  School  in  Park Ridge where he played
18    football; and

19        WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Kowalik enjoyed fishing, which he
20    shared with his father, Henryk, who preceded him in death two
21    years  after  arriving  in  America;  he  also  enjoyed   his
22    PlayStation,   Tom   and  Jerry  cartoons,  entertaining  his
23    friends' younger siblings, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers; and

24        WHEREAS, The passing of Lance Corporal Jakub  H.  Kowalik
25    has  been  deeply  felt  by  all who knew him, especially his
26    mother  Danuta  Kowalik  and  her  fiance,  Joseph  Kot;  his
27    brother, Paul Kowalik; and many other friends and  relatives;
28    therefore, be it

29        RESOLVED,   BY   THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES  OF  THE
30    NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS,  that
31    we  mourn the passing of Lance Corporal Jakub Henryk Kowalik,

 1    who will be remembered as a hero of the United States  Marine
 2    Corps; and be it further

 3        RESOLVED,  That  we  honor  the  memory of Lance Corporal
 4    Kowalik and his willingness to serve our great  nation  which
 5    led to him making the ultimate sacrifice; and be it further

 6        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
 7    presented to the family of Lance Corporal Jakub  H.  Kowalik,
 8    United  States  Marine Corps, as an expression of our deepest
 9    sympathy during their time of bereavement.
