 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, It has come to our  attention  that  Karl  Hess,
 3    University  of  Illinois Professor and resident of Champaign,
 4    has   been   recognized   for   his   excellent    scientific
 5    contributions  by  being  elected  to the National Academy of
 6    Sciences; and

 7        WHEREAS, Professor Hess holds the Swanlund Endowed  Chair
 8    in   Electrical  and  Computer  Engineering;  he  is  also  a
 9    professor with the Center for Advanced Study and  a  research
10    scientist   with   the  National  Center  for  Supercomputing
11    Applications at the University of Illinois; and

12        WHEREAS, Professor Hess' research involves semi-conductor
13    physics,  computational  electronics,  and  super   computing
14    applications;  he  received  his  doctorate  degree  from the
15    University of Vienna; and

16        WHEREAS, Professor  Hess  has  made  major  contributions
17    throughout   his   career   to   high   field   transport  in
18    semi-conductors; he has proven to be a leader in his field of
19    electrical engineering; he  has  also  been  elected  to  the
20    National Academy of Engineering; and

21        WHEREAS,  Professor  Hess  was  among the select group to
22    propose  the  founding  of  the  Beckman  Institute  at   the
23    University of Illinois; and

24        WHEREAS,  Professor  Hess  has  earned  the esteem of the
25    science  community  he  serves  and  the   respect   of   his
26    colleagues; therefore, be it

27        RESOLVED,  BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-
28    THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE  STATE  OF  ILLINOIS,  that  we
29    congratulate   Professor  Hess  on  the  recognition  of  his
30    important scientific contributions and his  election  to  the
31    National Academy of Sciences; and be it further

 1        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
 2    presented to Professor Karl Hess as a token  of  our  respect
 3    and esteem.
