 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives wish
 3    to honor the memory of Karen Lou Hamity formerly of  Highland
 4    Park who passed away on August 27, 2002; and

 5        WHEREAS, Karen Lou Hamity was born on September 29, 1949;
 6    she  was  a  graduate of Yale University and received her law
 7    degree from Northwestern  University;  at  the  time  of  her
 8    passing,  she  was employed by the Kaplan Foundation; she was
 9    married to Ludwig Kolman and she  was  the  mother  of  Noah,
10    Lily, and Chloe; and

11        WHEREAS,  Ms.  Hamity  was  the  recipient  of  the  2002
12    Highland  Park  Humanitarian  Award;  she  received the award
13    posthumously; and

14        WHEREAS, Ms. Hamity was very  involved  in  the  Highland
15    Park  Schools;  she  created  the Art Appreciation Program at
16    Ravinia Elementary School and helped design  the  Imagination
17    Station  that  encouraged  children to enjoy publishing their
18    literary works; and

19        WHEREAS, Ms. Hamity became involved as a  mentor  in  the
20    writing  lab at Highland Park High School in 1992; she worked
21    with the Patron of the Arts program and  chaperoned  at  Grad
22    nights;  she  set  up  a  Prevention  Program  which involved
23    sending out mailings to the school community and bringing  in
24    speakers; and

25        WHEREAS,  Ms.  Hamity  worked  with  Latino children; she
26    counseled children  about  healthy  choices,  drove  them  to
27    dental  appointments,  took  them out for coffee, and brought
28    them into her home; and

29        WHEREAS,  Ms.   Hamity   was   instrumental   in   Parent
30    University;  she  co-chaired  this  program  by  bringing  in
31    speakers,  organizing,  and  supervising;  she  served on the

 1    committee to Define the Gifted,  making  certain  there  were
 2    adequate  programs  available  to  the  large  population  of
 3    students who qualified; and

 4        WHEREAS,  Ms. Hamity will be remembered as a leader and a
 5    team  player;  she  exemplified  good  citizenship   in   her
 6    relentless  tasks  of correcting injustice in the schools and
 7    her community; therefore, be it

 8        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES   OF   THE
 9    NINETY-THIRD  GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
10    we honor the memory of Karen  Lou  Hamity  for  her  selfless
11    devotion to students and her community; and be it further

12        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
13    presented to the family of Karen Lou Hamity as a token of our
14    respect and esteem for her accomplishments.
