093_HR0146 LRB093 11275 HSS 12925 r 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, There is a tremendous increase in the need for 3 transportation services, particularly for the older 4 populations; persons 85 and over are the fastest growing 5 segment of the American population; twenty percent of the 6 Jewish community is over age 85; to address this need, the 7 United Jewish Communities and other organizations formed a 8 Senior Transportation Task Force; and 9 WHEREAS, Within the reauthorization of the Transportation 10 Equity Act for the 21st Century, the United States Congress 11 should significantly increase funding levels for the Federal 12 Transit Administration's Section 5310, which is the major 13 transit program for seniors, based on the dramatic increase 14 in the number of seniors in our population; and 15 WHEREAS, On Wednesday, February 26, 2003, the United 16 Jewish Communities and several Jewish Federations and social 17 service agencies joined together to sponsor a national 18 call-in day for senior transportation; members of these 19 communities called their congressmen and congresswomen in 20 order to express the importance of senior transportation 21 issues and to ask that their representatives and senators do 22 everything they can to work toward the reauthorization of the 23 Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century; therefore, be 24 it 25 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 26 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 27 we congratulate the coalition of the United Jewish 28 Communities, Jewish Federations, and Jewish social service 29 agencies on the National Call-In Day for Senior 30 Transportation that was held on February 26, 2003, and we 31 support their efforts on behalf of senior transportation; and 32 be it further -2- LRB093 11275 HSS 12925 r 1 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 2 presented to the United Jewish Communities and the Senior 3 Transportation Task Force with our best wishes.
