093_HR0055 LRB093 10612 HSS 10898 r 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of 3 the State of Illinois were saddened to learn of the death of 4 Doctor Reverand James W. Dorsey on Wednesday, January 22, 5 2003; and 6 WHEREAS, Dr. Dorsey was born on October 18, 1942 in 7 Waukegan; he graduated from Novak Elementary School and North 8 Chicago Community High School where he was an Illinois State 9 Champion Wrestler; he received his bachelor's degree from 10 Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin; his master's degree 11 from Roosevelt University; and a doctorate from the 12 University of Iowa; and 13 WHEREAS, Dr. Dorsey served four honorable years in the 14 United States Marine Corps; he worked as a Juvenile and Adult 15 Probation Officer for Lake County; he taught at North Chicago 16 High School and also was a Dean of Students; he was ordained 17 into ministry by the late Reverand J.N. Lightfoot; he was a 18 professor at the College of Lake County; and 19 WHEREAS, During February, Black History Month, Dr. Dorsey 20 gave freely of his time lecturing; he was an expert on the 21 history of Lake County's Underground Railroad; he was the 22 author of "UP South" and founder of The Sons of Thunder, an 23 organization committed to raising scholarship funds for 24 African-American students; and 25 WHEREAS, The passing of Dr. Dorsey has been deeply felt 26 by all who knew him, especially his wife of 33 years, 27 Jacqueline Dorsey; his two children, Kelley (Justin) and 28 Derrick; his mother, Margaret Dorsey; his sisters, Frances 29 (Pat) Tompkins and Joan (James) Winston; his brothers, Curtis 30 (Barbara) Dorsey and Marvin Dorsey; his aunt, Maria McNulty; 31 his uncles, Fred Hollingsworth, Dean Dorsey, and Mel Dorsey; 32 his brothers-in-law, Robert (Valda) Whitehead, Timothy (Kay) -2- LRB093 10612 HSS 10898 r 1 Whitehead, and Lawrence (Laura) Whitehead; his 2 sisters-in-law, Cleopatra (Bruce) Cowins and Mallie (Luke) 3 Nichols; and his host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and 4 friends; therefore, be it 5 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 6 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 7 we mourn the passing of Doctor Reverand James W. Dorsey, a 8 man who will be remembered for his smile and genuine concern 9 for others, and we offer his family and friends our deepest 10 sympathy; and be it further 11 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 12 presented to the family of Dr. James W. Dorsey with our 13 sincerest condolences.
