 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, The Pottawatomie and other Indian  tribes  first
 3    inhabited  the  area of Hickory Grove, which is now a part of
 4    the City of Rochelle; and

 5        WHEREAS, The first  permanent  white  settlers  in  Flagg
 6    Township  in  the  southeastern part of Ogle County, Illinois
 7    were Jeptha C. Noe, his wife  Lucinda,  and  their  children;
 8    they  arrived  in  1835  and settled in Jefferson Grove three
 9    miles west of the City of Rochelle; and

10        WHEREAS, Other settlers began to make their homes in  the
11    area  called  Hickory Grove near Kyte River, where they built
12    businesses and established farms; and

13        WHEREAS, In 1853, a large tract of land in  and  adjacent
14    to  Hickory  Grove  was  purchased  by  R.P. Lane, along with
15    others, and a village was  laid  out  in  anticipation  of  a
16    railroad coming through the area; and

17        WHEREAS,   On   July  30,  1853  the  Town  of  Lane  was
18    incorporated and registered in the County Clerk's  Office  at
19    the Ogle County Court House; and

20        WHEREAS,  The Town of Lane became the City of Rochelle on
21    February 16, 1865; therefore, be it

22        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES   OF   THE
23    NINETY-THIRD  GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
24    we proclaim July 30, 2003 as the  City  of  Rochelle's  150th
25    Birthday; and be it further

26        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
27    presented to the Mayor of the City of Rochelle.
