Amends the Department of Public Health Act.
Provides that if, as part of its program of
health benefits,
the State of Illinois allows or provides incentives for State employees or
State
retirees to
purchase prescription drugs from a pharmacist or other distributor located in a
country
other than the United States, then the Department of Public Health must develop
and
implement a certification program for those foreign drugs. Requires that this
certification
program must be designed to ensure the safety and efficacy of the drugs.
Effective
immediately.

| AN ACT concerning prescription drugs.

| Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, |

| represented in the General Assembly:
|

| Section 5. The Department of Public Health Act
is amended |

| by adding
Section 7.5 as follows:
|

| (20 ILCS 2305/7.5 new)
|

| Sec. 7.5. Foreign medications certification. If, as part of |
8 |
| its program
of health
benefits, the State of Illinois allows or |
9 |
| provides incentives for State
employees or State
retirees to |
10 |
| purchase prescription drugs from a pharmacist or other |
11 |
| distributor
located in a
country other than the United States, |
12 |
| then the Department must develop and
implement a
certification |
13 |
| program for those foreign drugs. This certification program |
14 |
| must
be
designed to ensure the safety and efficacy of the |
15 |
| drugs.

| Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon |
17 |
| becoming law. |
