| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate the Sauganash Woman's |
| 4 | | Club on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of its founding |
| 5 | | in 2026; and |
| 6 | | WHEREAS, The Sauganash community in Chicago was carved |
| 7 | | from prairie and woods after realtors Koester and Zander |
| 8 | | subdivided 65 acres into a residential area in 1926, an area |
| 9 | | that was a remote, country-like setting with unpaved roads and |
| 10 | | portable buildings for schools and churches; and |
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Henry Zander Jr. met with local women to envision |
| 12 | | a social and civic cornerstone for the neighborhood, and this |
| 13 | | vision came to life at the home of Luella Carsten, leading to |
| 14 | | the official organization of the Sauganash Woman's Club; and |
| 15 | | WHEREAS, The Sauganash Woman's Club's first formal meeting |
| 16 | | consisted of 27 pioneering women at the home of C. M. Fries, |
| 17 | | where Owen O'Malley was elected as the first president, |
| 18 | | establishing the very first women's organization in the |
| 19 | | neighborhood; and |
| 20 | | WHEREAS, The Sauganash Woman's Club's official crest, |
| 21 | | designed by Nancy Mix, beautifully honors the community's |

| 1 | | heritage by incorporating a carnation, which is the club |
| 2 | | flower, alongside a feather and arrow to symbolize Chief |
| 3 | | Sauganash, for whom the community is named; and |
| 4 | | WHEREAS, For 100 years, the Sauganash Woman's Club has |
| 5 | | remained a membership-based nonprofit that bridges |
| 6 | | generations, embodying the core attributes of loyalty and |
| 7 | | cooperation while fostering lifelong friendships among women |
| 8 | | in Sauganash and surrounding areas; and |
| 9 | | WHEREAS, The Sauganash Woman's Club's impact is felt |
| 10 | | through its robust philanthropic efforts and cherished |
| 11 | | community traditions, including the annual Easter egg hunt at |
| 12 | | Sauganash Park, featuring over 5,000 eggs, and support for |
| 13 | | local Halloween festivities and various charities; and |
| 14 | | WHEREAS, The Sauganash Woman's Club continues to evolve as |
| 15 | | a modern, dynamic organization, offering diverse programming |
| 16 | | from theater outings and brewery socials to garden parties, |
| 17 | | pickleball, and its traditional monthly meetings at the |
| 18 | | Sauganash Park Fieldhouse; and |
| 19 | | WHEREAS, The Sauganash Woman's Club remains a vital thread |
| 20 | | in the fabric of Chicago's North Side, proving that while a |
| 21 | | century has passed since its founding, its mission of |
| 22 | | strengthening the community through fellowship is more |

| 1 | | relevant than ever; therefore, be it |
| 2 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
| 3 | | HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
| 4 | | we congratulate the Sauganash Woman's Club on the occasion of |
| 5 | | its 100th anniversary, commend its members past and present |
| 6 | | for their century of service, and extend our best wishes for |
| 7 | | its continued success; and be it further |
| 8 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 9 | | presented to the leadership of the Sauganash Woman's Club as a |
| 10 | | symbol of our esteem and respect. |
