2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened |
3 | | to learn of the death of Leila Mae Clay, beloved family |
4 | | matriarch; and |
5 | | WHEREAS, Leila Clay was born to Levi and Esther (Steagall) |
6 | | Wood in Newnan, Georgia on October 11, 1932; she married |
7 | | Lonnie Clay in July 1950, and they lived in Okinawa, Japan and |
8 | | Franfurt, Germany during his time of service in the U.S. Army |
9 | | before moving to Chicago in 1960 following his discharge; and |
10 | | WHEREAS, Leila Clay worked for the U.S. Postal Service, |
11 | | retiring after decades of service; and |
12 | | WHEREAS, Leila Clay was deeply committed to her faith and |
13 | | a longtime member of Alpha Temple Missionary Baptist Church; |
14 | | she was also an active member of the community and served as |
15 | | Treasure of 77th Wood Street Block club; and |
16 | | WHEREAS, Leila Clay was a model of self-sufficiency, |
17 | | maintaining her home and independence into her 90s; she was a |
18 | | life-long learner and enjoyed serving others and spending |
19 | | quality time with family, helping organize numerous family |
20 | | reunions in Washington D.C., Chicago, Newnan, Georgia, and |
21 | | Atlanta, Georgia; and |

2 | | her husband; and her siblings, Lucille (James) McCombs, Sara |
3 | | (Arthur Lee) Berry, and J.C. (Suzette) Wood; and |
4 | | WHEREAS, Leila Clay is survived by her sons, Larry |
5 | | (Sylvia) Clay and Randy (Analilia) Clay; her grandchildren, |
6 | | Erick D. (Leslie) Clay, Randy L. (Lashawn) Clay, Edward C. |
7 | | (Helen) Clay, Jeremy Henley, Tiffani L. Clay, Melissa Clay |
8 | | (Theresa) Barnes, and Lonnie Clay III; her |
9 | | great-grandchildren, Justin J. Clay, Ethan D. Clay, Gabrielle |
10 | | Clay, Camille Clay, Randy L. Clay Jr., Eric Delahoussaye, |
