2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened |
3 | | to learn of the death of George Robert "Bob" Newhart, who |
4 | | passed away on July 18, 2024; and |
5 | | WHEREAS, Bob Newhart, the son of George David Newhart and |
6 | | Julia Pauline, was born in Oak Park on September 5, 1929; As a |
7 | | child, he attended St. Catherine of Siena Grade School and St. |
8 | | Ignatius College Prep; he graduated with a degree in business |
9 | | management from Loyola University in 1952; he briefly attended |
10 | | the university's law school before being drafted into the U.S. |
11 | | Army during the Korean War, where he served two years auditing |
12 | | personnel records at bases along the West Coast; and |
13 | | WHEREAS, Upon completion of his military service, Bob |
14 | | Newhart returned to Chicago and worked as an accountant for |
15 | | U.S. Gypsum and the Glidden Company; and |
16 | | WHEREAS, Bob Newhart first dabbled in entertainment when |
17 | | he would call his friend Ed Gallagher and pretend to be |
18 | | different characters; the two decided to record the |
19 | | conversations and unsuccessfully tried to sell the tapes to |
20 | | Chicago radio stations; and |
21 | | WHEREAS, Bob Newhart's big break came when a |

1 | | representative at Warner Bros Records wanted to record his |
2 | | comedy act the next time he performed in front of a live |
3 | | audience; having never performed his comedy in a club, he |
4 | | quickly set up some live performances, and his comedy set at |
5 | | the Tidelands Motor Inn in Houston, Texas on February 10, 1960 |
6 | | was recorded into a new comedy album entitled "The Button-Down |
7 | | Mind of Bob Newhart", which came out in April and was an |
8 | | instant hit; the album sold more than a million albums and hit |
9 | | number one on the charts; and |
10 | | WHEREAS, Bob Newhart's follow-up album, "The Button-Down |
11 | | Mind Strikes Back", was another smash hit, and, for several |
12 | | weeks, the two albums held the number one and number two spots |
13 | | on the charts; and |
14 | | WHEREAS, Bob Newhart moved from Chicago to California, |
15 | | where he hosted two short-lived television variety shows, one |
16 | | of which won an Emmy and a Peabody Award in 1962, which was |
17 | | also the year he met Virginia "Ginnie" Quinn; the couple |
18 | | married in 1963; and |
19 | | WHEREAS, Bob Newhart's life as a sitcom star began in 1972 |
20 | | with the debut of "The Bob Newhart Show" in which he played the |
21 | | perpetually put-upon Chicago psychologist Bob Hartley; the CBS |
22 | | show ran for six successful seasons; and |

1 | | WHEREAS, From 1982 to 1989, Bob Newhart starred in |
2 | | "Newhart," a popular CBS sitcom about a Vermont innkeeper and |
3 | | the wacky townies who surrounded him; and |
4 | | WHEREAS, Bob Newhart's other television credits include |
5 | | roles in the shows "Bob", "George & Leo", "Desperate |
6 | | Housewives", "ER", "The Simpsons" and the "Big Bang Theory"; |
7 | | he also had starring roles in the films "Catch 22" and "Elf"; |
8 | | and |
9 | | WHEREAS, Bob Newhart received a number of awards and |
10 | | accolades throughout his lifetime, including a Grammy for Best |
11 | | New Artist and for Album of the Year for his album "The |
12 | | Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart" in 1961 and a Grammy for Best |
13 | | Comedy Performance-Spoken Word for his album "The Button-Down |
14 | | Mind Strikes Back!" that same year; he won an Emmy for |
15 | | Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his recurring |
16 | | role on "The Big Bang Theory"; he received the Sword of Loyola |
17 | | from Loyola University in 1975, and the university named their |
18 | | new theater "The Newhart Family Theatre" in his honor; he was |
19 | | honored with the Mark Twain Prize for Humor from the Kennedy |
20 | | Center in 2002, of which he was enormously proud; in Chicago, a |
21 | | statue portraying him in his famous role as psychologist Bob |
22 | | Hartley can be found on Navy Pier; and |
23 | | WHEREAS, Bob Newhart loved performing stand up comedy and |

1 | | golfing at his Bel-Aire Country Club; and |
2 | | WHEREAS, Bob Newhart was preceded in death by his wife; |
3 | | and |
4 | | WHEREAS, Bob Newhart is survived by his children, Robert, |
5 | | Timothy, Courtney, and Jennifer; therefore, be it |
6 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL |
7 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
8 | | George Robert "Bob" Newhart and extend our sincere condolences |
9 | | to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be |
10 | | it further |
11 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
12 | | presented to the family of Bob Newhart as an expression of our |
13 | | deepest sympathy. |
