2 | WHEREAS, Disc golf is perfect for anyone looking to teach, | ||||||
3 | share, and enjoy a lifetime sport; it is a healthy, | ||||||
4 | inexpensive activity that provides upper and lower body | ||||||
5 | conditioning, aerobic exercise, and mental stimulation; played | ||||||
6 | on a course with nine or 18 holes, players aim to reach a | ||||||
7 | basket by throwing a disc from a tee pad, with the goal of | ||||||
8 | completing each hole in the fewest throws; the sport is played | ||||||
9 | in approximately 40 countries and, as of April 26, 2023, | ||||||
10 | boasts 107,853 active members of the Professional Disc Golf | ||||||
11 | Association (PDGA) worldwide; and | ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, In the 1920s, the earliest known games of disc | ||||||
13 | golf were played by children at Bladworth Elementary School in | ||||||
14 | Saskatchewan, Canada; and | ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, In 1976, the success of disc golf at the World | ||||||
16 | Frisbee Championships suggested that this sport was the next | ||||||
17 | big thing, and Ed Headrick created the Disc Golf Association | ||||||
18 | (DGA); even today, it functions as a leader in the sport; and | ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, In 1977, one of the earliest courses with baskets | ||||||
20 | installed, though no longer in existence, was created by Ed | ||||||
21 | Headrick, known as the Father of Disc Golf, in Gilson Park in | ||||||
22 | Wilmette; and |

1 | WHEREAS, In the fall of 2014, The Canyons opened, built by | ||||||
2 | volunteers at Dellwood Park in Lockport; in 2024, UDisc ranked | ||||||
3 | The Canyons as the 17th best disc golf course and the 2nd best | ||||||
4 | free course in the world; and | ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, On June 3, 2021, the City of Chicago saw its first | ||||||
6 | 18 hole course in Jackson Park, utilizing temporary baskets | ||||||
7 | funded by individual donations and the support of the Paul | ||||||
8 | McBeth Foundation and maintained by volunteers of the | ||||||
9 | nonprofit Hyde Park Disc Golf; and | ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Northwood Black in Morton is considered one of | ||||||
11 | the most difficult courses on the professional tour and is | ||||||
12 | home of The Ledgestone Open, which is recognized as one of the | ||||||
13 | biggest disc golf events in the world, both in terms of | ||||||
14 | participants and size of the professional prize purse; and | ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Douglas Park in Springfield hosts the Deaf | ||||||
16 | Central Open on June 1st and 2nd, serving as the regional | ||||||
17 | qualifier for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) disc golfers, and | ||||||
18 | is celebrated for its challenging layout and inclusive | ||||||
19 | community spirit, attracting participants from across the | ||||||
20 | Midwest; and | ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, Disc golf is so popular and rapidly growing that |

1 | there are 11,300 courses globally, with 75 percent of all disc | ||||||
2 | golf courses being in the United States, 369 courses in | ||||||
3 | Illinois alone, ranking it as the 4th best state for course | ||||||
4 | availability and 13th best state for course variety as | ||||||
5 | reported in the Disc Golf Health Index; and | ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Disc golf is accessible and enjoyable for people | ||||||
7 | of all socioeconomic classes, age groups, and demographics and | ||||||
8 | provides a way to exercise, a way to spend time outdoors, and a | ||||||
9 | wide range of health benefits; and | ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Disc golf is a sport that, when the | ||||||
11 | infrastructure is available, takes only minutes to learn yet | ||||||
12 | provides a lifetime of enjoyment in the natural world; | ||||||
13 | therefore, be it | ||||||
14 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
15 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare the month of | ||||||
16 | August 2024 as Illinois Disc Golf Month and August 10, 2024 as | ||||||
17 | Illinois Disc Golf Day, recognizing the teamwork and physical, | ||||||
18 | mental, and emotional well-being the sport provides. |
