SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Richard P. Henke, who passed away on
4April 9, 2023; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Richard Henke graduated cum laude from Knox
6College in 1956 with a degree in chemistry; while at Knox, he
7participated in intramural swimming and track, served as
8treasurer of Campus Chest, and was a member and president of
9Phi Gamma Delta; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Richard Henke attended Stanford Medical School
11and received his M.D. in 1960; he continued his career with an
12internship and residencies in internal medicine and pathology
13at the University of Minnesota and the University of
14California School of Medicine; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Richard Henke was certified by the American Board
16of Pathology in 1966 and served as a pathologist in private
17practices in Daly City and Long Beach, California; he was
18affiliated with the American Society for Microbiology and the
19American Society of Clinical Pathologists; he served on the
20board of the Association for Practitioners in Infection
21Control and for two terms as the president of the California
22Society of Pathologists; and

1    WHEREAS, Richard Henke was involved in graduate and
2postgraduate education at the University of California,
3Irvine, California State University Dominguez Hills, and
4California State University of Long Beach, where he helped
5educate physicians, nurses, and laboratory technologists; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Richard Henke's devotion to both his family and
7Knox College was evident to all who knew him; he and his late
8wife, Sophia Dimitriadis, made several notable contributions
9to the college, including the Henke Distinguished
10Professorship endowment, which honors a faculty member who
11demonstrates excellence in undergraduate teaching, the Richard
12P. and Sophia D. Henke Music Fund, which supports various
13initiatives and capital needs of the music department,
14enabling the program to be dynamic and student-centered, and
15the Richard P. and Sophia D. Henke Library Fellowship, which
16provides an immersive experience in academic librarianship for
17students interested in libraries and archives as a possible
18career; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Richard Henke was an active volunteer in his
20community, local city government, library district, and
21professional organizations; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Richard Henke was preceded in death by his wife,

1Sophia; and
 
2    WHEREAS, At the time of his passing, Richard Henke was
3survived by loving family members, including his son, William
4Henke, and his granddaughter, Sophia Elswick; therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
6ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
7Richard P. Henke and extend our sincere condolences to his
8family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
9further
 
10    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11presented to the family of Richard Henke as an expression of
12our deepest sympathy.
