2 | | WHEREAS, On December 29, 1970, President Richard Nixon |
3 | | signed into law the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), |
4 | | which went into effect on April 28, 1971; and |
5 | | WHEREAS, OSHA was created with the intent to provide |
6 | | American workers the right to a safe workplace through |
7 | | requiring employers to provide safe working conditions; and |
8 | | WHEREAS, Despite the existence of OSHA, tens of thousands |
9 | | of American workers are killed by workplace injuries and |
10 | | occupational disease every year, while tens of thousands more |
11 | | are permanently disabled, injured, or made ill; and |
12 | | WHEREAS, Each April, Workers' Memorial Day has been |
13 | | observed as a day to remember those who have suffered and died |
14 | | on the job; and |
15 | | WHEREAS, Since 1989, workers, employers, and government |
16 | | leaders have typically gathered on or near April 28th to |
17 | | commemorate those who have lost their lives while working to |
18 | | provide a good standard of living for their families and |
19 | | communities; therefore, be it |
20 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL |
