SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Philip Hackman "Phil" Good, who passed
4away on February 20, 2024; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Phil Good was born to Everett Oliver Good and
6Gladys Hackman Good in Kewanee on February 7, 1935; he
7graduated from Kewanee High School in 1952; he received a
8degree in economics from Colorado College, where he was a
9cadet in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC); he
10served in the U.S. Army Reserves, and he was honorably
11discharged in 1964 with the rank of captain and commander of
12Company C, 338th Regiment, 85th Division; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Phil Good was the third generation owner of the
14family-owned furniture store, Good's Furniture and Mattress,
15originally established by his grandfather, Elmer Samuel "E.S."
16Good, in 1895; he joined his father, Everett, to work at the
17store in 1957; he ran the store's first TV commercial in the
18Quad Cities in 1971, and he soon began running TV
19advertisements featuring his future wife, Mary Heberer Good,
20making both her and the store regionally famous; as other
21businesses left downtown Kewanee, he acquired buildings and
22created a furniture destination unlike any other; by the early
232000s, he had turned the store into a sprawling quarter

1million-foot furniture destination that spanned three city
2blocks and served the entire Midwest; he was regarded as an
3innovator in retail marketing and advertising; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Phil Good was active in the Kewanee community,
5serving on many boards over his lifetime, including the
6Library Board, the Illinois State Library Board, the Rotary
7Club of Kewanee, the Kewanee Hospital Board, and others; he
8also served on the Union Federal Savings and Loan Board and as
9president of Kewanee Credit Bureau Board; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Phil Good received many industry awards and
11accolades for his innovation in the furniture industry; he was
12named an Outstanding Citizen of the Year, Illinois Retailer of
13the Year, and Retailer of the 21st Century; he was made an
14Honorary Boilermaker in 2007; he was given the key to the City
15of Kewanee, and his high school football team was inducted
16into the Kewanee Athletic Hall of Fame; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Phil Good enjoyed golfing, water skiing, and
18black diamond skiing in Colorado in his early days, and he was
19an avid runner for many years; he was a fan of the Chicago Cubs
20and the Chicago Bears; he loved reading and traveling to the
21ocean and the mountains; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Phil Good, known for his kind, gentle, and

1charismatic nature, was a family man who always lived life in
2the moment; he will be remembered for his spirit and integrity
3and for serving as an inspiring leader and exceptional mentor
4to many; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Phil Good was preceded in death by his parents
6and his brother, James Good; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Phil Good is survived by his wife, Mary Heberer
8Good; his brother, David (Rosemary) Good; his children, John
9Good, Jean (Reed) Brickell, Mary Anne (Bob) Dybdal, and Phil
10(Kaleigh) Good Jr.; nine grandchildren; and 15
11great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
14Philip Hackman "Phil" Good and extend our sincere condolences
15to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be
16it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Phil Good as an expression of our
19deepest sympathy.
