| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened |
| 3 | | to learn of the death of Mary Lou Newell of St. Louis, |
| 4 | | Missouri, formerly of Ashland, who passed away on January 12, |
| 5 | | 2024; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Mary Lou Newell was born to Jesse Liter and Jean |
| 7 | | Helen (Caldwell) Petefish in Literberry on June 15, 1928; she |
| 8 | | attended Ashland High School; she received a degree in |
| 9 | | elementary education from Western Illinois University; she |
| 10 | | married Bob Newell at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Ashland |
| 11 | | on October 17, 1953; and
|
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Mary Lou Newell taught second grade in Lincoln |
| 13 | | and Springfield, and she worked as a substitute teacher at |
| 14 | | Ashland Elementary School; and
|
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Mary Lou Newell dedicated her time to various |
| 16 | | volunteer organizations, including actively contributing to |
| 17 | | St. Augustine's Altar Society and the Ashland Junior Women's |
| 18 | | Club, helping in the maternity department at St. John's |
| 19 | | Hospital in Springfield, and delivering Meals on Wheels in |
| 20 | | Ashland for 10 years; she and her husband, Bob, volunteered |
| 21 | | for Helping Hands in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, where they |
| 22 | | lived for 11 years; and
|

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Mary Lou Newell enjoyed cooking, gardening, |
| 2 | | babysitting her grandchildren, antiquing, and traveling the |
| 3 | | world; and
|
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Mary Lou Newell will be remembered for her |
| 5 | | compassion and generosity; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Mary Lou Newell was preceded in death by her |
| 7 | | husband of 61 years, Bob; her brothers, Ward Petefish and |
| 8 | | Richard Petefish; and her sisters, Sarah Allen and Lois Yancy; |
| 9 | | and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Mary Lou Newell is survived by her children, |
| 11 | | Stephen (Leah) Newell, Janet (Dennis) Thomas, Margaret (Dave) |
| 12 | | McLaughlin, and Kathleen (Don) Angle; her grandchildren, Liz |
| 13 | | (Chris Malerich) Newell, Andy (Kat) Newell, John (Jenna) |
| 14 | | Thomas, Jathan (Chelsea) McLaughlin, Patrick (Noelle) |
| 15 | | McLaughlin, Rob (Amanda) McLaughlin, Matt (Katie) Angle, Laura |
| 16 | | Angle, and Greg (Nicole) Angle; and nine great-grandchildren, |
| 17 | | with two more on the way; therefore, be it

| 18 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL |
| 19 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
| 20 | | Mary Lou Newell and extend our sincere condolences to her |
| 21 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it |
