SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Reverend Daniel Albert "Dan" Smilanic
4of Chicago, who passed away on February 20, 2024; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Rev. Smilanic was born to Nicholas and Mary
6(Crowe) Smilanic in Chicago on July 2, 1947; he graduated from
7St. Giles Parish School in Oak Park in 1961 and Quigley North
8Preparatory Seminary High School in Chicago in 1965; he
9attended Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio for one year
10before matriculating to Loyola University in Chicago and the
11University of Saint Mary of the Lake in Mundelein; he was
12ordained as a Roman Catholic priest for the Archdiocese of
13Chicago in 1973; he received his Doctor of Canon Law from the
14Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Italy; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Rev. Smilanic served as an associate pastor at
16several parishes in the Chicago area, including St. Gall
17Catholic Church and Mary, Seat of Wisdom; after receiving his
18doctorate, he served as the judicial vicar for the Archdiocese
19of Chicago for many years; he later served as the judicial
20vicar for the diocese of Gaylord, Michigan; during this time,
21he was a longtime resident priest at St. Paul of the Cross in
22Park Ridge; and

1    WHEREAS, Rev. Smilanic was preceded in death by his
2parents; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Rev. Smilanic is survived by his siblings, John
4"Jack" (Barbara) Smilanic, Mary Eileen (Joseph) Madda, and
5Julie (William) Ness, and his nieces and nephews, Mary Jo
6Madda, Lea Madda, Alex Madda, and Kathryn Ness; therefore, be
7it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
9ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
10Reverend Daniel Albert "Dan" Smilanic and extend our sincere
11condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
12him; and be it further
 
13    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14presented to the family of Rev. Smilanic as an expression of
15our deepest sympathy.
