2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened |
3 | | to learn of the death of Martin M. Offergeld of Moline, who |
4 | | passed away on February 8, 2024; and |
5 | | WHEREAS, Martin Offergeld was born to Martin C. and Julia |
6 | | Battaglia Offergeld in LaSalle on September 23, 1933; he |
7 | | graduated from Colorado College, where he was a member of |
8 | | Kappa Sigma Fraternity and lettered in football; he served in |
9 | | the U.S. Army for two years; he married Sandra R. Thomas on |
10 | | July 26, 1958; and |
11 | | WHEREAS, Martin Offergeld worked in management and sales |
12 | | for MetLife for 36 years, retiring in 1994; over the course of |
13 | | his career, he qualified for the company's Million Dollar |
14 | | Round Table (MDRT) four times; and |
15 | | WHEREAS, Martin Offergeld was a member of Christ the King |
16 | | Catholic Church, where he was a lector and a minister of the |
17 | | Eucharist; he was a past member of the Rock Island and Moline |
18 | | Rotary Clubs and the Knights of Columbus; he was a founding |
19 | | member of the Quad Cities Table Tennis Club in Davenport, |
20 | | Iowa; and |
21 | | WHEREAS, Martin Offergeld enjoyed golfing and playing |

1 | | tennis, table tennis, and pinochle; he competed in golf, table |
2 | | tennis, and basketball in the Senior Olympics for 24 years; he |
3 | | earned numerous awards in table tennis singles and doubles in |
4 | | five national tournaments; he was selected as Athlete of the |
5 | | Year by Prairie State Games in 1999 and inducted into the |
6 | | Prairie State Games Hall of Fame in 2003; and |
7 | | WHEREAS, Martin Offergeld was a fan of the Chicago Cubs, |
8 | | the Chicago Bears, the Chicago Bulls, and the Fighting Illini; |
9 | | and |
10 | | WHEREAS, Martin Offergeld was preceded in death by his |
11 | | wife and his parents; and |
12 | | WHEREAS, Martin Offergeld is survived by his children, |
13 | | Lori Offergeld, Martin T. Offergeld, Leslie Offergeld, and |
14 | | Michael Offergeld, and his grandchildren, David Elovitz and |
15 | | Anna Elovitz; therefore, be it |
16 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL |
17 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
18 | | Martin M. Offergeld and extend our sincere condolences to his |
19 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it |
