2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Stanley Joseph Martin of Springfield, | ||||||
4 | who passed away on January 7, 2024; and | ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Stanley Martin was born to Joseph and Alta | ||||||
6 | (Goslin) Martin in Paxton on January 3, 1940; he was raised in | ||||||
7 | Buckley, where he worked on the family farm and raised crops | ||||||
8 | and livestock; he attended public schools in Buckley and | ||||||
9 | graduated from Buckley High School in 1957, where he was | ||||||
10 | president of his senior class; he married Wanda Billingsley at | ||||||
11 | the United Methodist Church in Buckley on July 6, 1958, and | ||||||
12 | they moved to Springfield in 2014; and | ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Stanley Martin worked at Squibb Pharmaceuticals | ||||||
14 | in Franklin Park near Chicago before returning home to work on | ||||||
15 | the family farm when his father became ill; he raised champion | ||||||
16 | polled Hereford cattle and was one of the first farmers to move | ||||||
17 | to 30-inch rows; he also worked part-time with the Artesia | ||||||
18 | Township Road Commissioner; he started a position at the | ||||||
19 | Illinois Department of Transportation in 1968, where he worked | ||||||
20 | for more than 25 years; and | ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, During the Vietnam War, Stanley Martin | ||||||
22 | volunteered to help local baker Jack Luker prepare and |

1 | distribute Angel Food cakes that were air dropped to troops on | ||||||
2 | the battlefield overseas; he also sent his German Shepherd, | ||||||
3 | Duke, to Vietnam to help in the war effort; and | ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Stanley Martin served as president of the | ||||||
5 | Woodland Cemetery Association; during his tenure, the cemetery | ||||||
6 | was expanded and historic tombstones were refurbished; he was | ||||||
7 | also a member of the Pontiac Elks, the Loyal Order of Moose, | ||||||
8 | the Farmers' Union, and the United Methodist Church; and | ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Stanley Martin was recognized by the Illinois | ||||||
10 | State Police for his actions during the Crescent City train | ||||||
11 | derailment in 1970; and | ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Stanley Martin was an avid amateur citizen band | ||||||
13 | radio enthusiast and an enthusiastic reader; he enjoyed | ||||||
14 | gardening, canning vegetables, landscaping, tinkering in his | ||||||
15 | workshop, and spending his time with others, including | ||||||
16 | coaching his daughters' women's softball team or helping | ||||||
17 | uptown; before going to work, he played Euchre and Schafkopf | ||||||
18 | with his longtime friends in uptown Buckley every morning; | ||||||
19 | during his retirement, he opened the 103 East Bar in Buckley | ||||||
20 | each morning for those who wanted to play cards; and | ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, Stanley Martin was known for his ability to | ||||||
22 | quickly make friends with people from all walks of life |

1 | wherever he went; he will be remembered for his ability to turn | ||||||
2 | a word, poke fun at everyday life, and his quick wit; and | ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Stanley Martin was preceded in death by his | ||||||
4 | parents; his brother, Gerald Martin; and his infant twin | ||||||
5 | brothers; and | ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Stanley Martin is survived by his wife; his | ||||||
7 | sister, Joan Walton; his children, Kelly (Carl) Hasselbring, | ||||||
8 | Stanley Joseph (Joe) Martin Jr., and Mona (David Joens) | ||||||
9 | Martin; his grandchildren, Cade (Johanna) Hasselbring, Jordan | ||||||
10 | (Shawnna Rose) Hasselbring, Ali (Nick) Langley, and Benjamin | ||||||
11 | Joens; and his great-grandchildren, Izabelle Hasselbring, | ||||||
12 | McKenzi Hasselbring, Aliza Hasselbring, Zavin Hasselbring, | ||||||
13 | Calvin Hasselbring, Carson Langley, and Avery Langley; | ||||||
14 | therefore, be it | ||||||
15 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
16 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
17 | Stanley Joseph Martin and extend our sincere condolences to | ||||||
18 | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
19 | further | ||||||
20 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
21 | presented to the family of Stanley Martin as an expression of | ||||||
22 | our deepest sympathy. |
