SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Mary Seton Elizabeth Killeen McDermott, who passed away on December 18, 2023; and

WHEREAS, Mary McDermott was born to Sarah Matilda Ann Cassidy Killeen and Thomas Joseph Valentine Killeen in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on December 25, 1939; she attended Immaculate Conception Grade School in Germantown and Little Flower High School in Philadelphia; in her youth, she loved dancing and appeared on American Bandstand; she married John Daniel "Jack" McDermott; and

WHEREAS, Mary McDermott was primarily a stay-at-home mother who took on multiple part-time jobs over the years; after moving from Pennsylvania to Illinois in 1977, she worked for Montgomery Ward for many years; she retired from AIG New Hampshire Insurance in 2005; and

WHEREAS, Mary McDermott was a member of the Social Event Committee at St. John of the Cross Church, the M.E.R.C.Y. Community Committee at St. Joseph the Worker Church in Chatham, and the OWLS senior group at St. Joseph; she volunteered as a cub scout den mother for the Boy Scouts, a lunchroom mother at the local grade school, and at Memorial Medical Center and the Baylis Building; and

WHEREAS, Mary McDermott enjoyed entertaining and feeding friends and family, traveling, cross stitching, gardening, and playing solitaire or Wordle on her phone; she kept up with technology to maintain deep connections with her family and faithfully attended her grandchildren's sporting events; she enjoyed visiting with her friends at local wineries and restaurants; she loved all the family pets; and

WHEREAS, Mary McDermott was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 59 years; three brothers; six sisters; her son-in-law, Bill Smart; and her grandsons, Brandon Casper and Brian Smart; and

WHEREAS, Mary McDermott was the mother of five children, Mary Seton (Bill) Smart, Eileen (Steve) Parn, John (Connie) McDermott, Joan (Tim) Casper, and Bill (Kristin) McDermott; the grandmother of 17 grandchildren; and the great-grandmother of 18 great-grandchildren; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Mary Seton Elizabeth Killeen McDermott and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Mary McDermott as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
