SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of George Peter Yanos of Oak Park, who
4passed away on May 12, 2023 at the age of 76; and
 
5    WHEREAS, George Yanos was born to a nurse and carpenter in
6Yonkers, New York on November 22, 1946; and
 
7    WHEREAS, George Yanos developed an understanding of the
8importance of family through his grandfather's teachings,
9which stayed with him for the rest of his life; and
 
10    WHEREAS, George Yanos married Jan Hagan on December 27,
111967, and together, they moved to Chicago and then to Oak Park;
12and
 
13    WHEREAS, George Yanos worked at the computer center of the
14University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), while supporting his
15wife who was studying to become a professor of social work;
16while there, he was a part of everything, from managing punch
17cards to installing a supercomputer along with other
18professional projects; and
 
19    WHEREAS, George Yanos briefly worked as a high school
20mathematics teacher before returning to academia as a

1researcher and educator at the Urban Transportation Center of
2UIC, where he relished helping his colleagues and mentoring
3graduate students; and
 
4    WHEREAS, George Yanos remained modest about his role in
5the invention of the internet; and
 
6    WHEREAS, George Yanos dedicated himself to working through
7problems and always learning by simply being curious; and
 
8    WHEREAS, George Yanos loved growing tomatoes and making
9spaghetti sauce for his family; and
 
10    WHEREAS, George Yanos is survived by his daughter and best
11friend, Nora (Scott); his grandchildren, Belle, Ryan, and
12Julia; his dogs, Dashi and Kechi; and the families of his
13brothers John and Paul, his nieces and nephews; therefore, be
14it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
16ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
17George Peter Yanos and extend our sincere condolences to his
18family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
19further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
