2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened |
3 | | to learn of the death of Lois L. Tyson of Oak Park, who passed |
4 | | away on July 23, 2023 at the age of 80; and |
5 | | WHEREAS, Lois Tyson was born in East St. Louis on February |
6 | | 27, 1943; she graduated from Lincoln Senior High School before |
7 | | majoring in elementary education with a concentration in |
8 | | English at Southern Illinois University; she married Spencer |
9 | | A. Tyson, and they had two daughters, Kimberly and Nicole, and |
10 | | lived in Georgia and New Jersey before returning to Illinois; |
11 | | she earned her master's degree in education from Concordia |
12 | | University, and she possessed a real estate license; she was a |
13 | | longtime resident of Oak Park and River Forest; and |
14 | | WHEREAS, For more than two decades, Lois Tyson taught at |
15 | | the Eunice Smith School in Alton and Oak Park Elementary |
16 | | School District 97; and |
17 | | WHEREAS, Lois Tyson was devoted to serving local |
18 | | organizations, including Parents Allied with Children and |
19 | | Teachers for Tomorrow (PACTT) and the Philanthropic Education |
20 | | Organization (PEO) Sisterhood, where she served as president |
21 | | of the local chapter from 2014 to 2017; she attended Pilgrim |
22 | | Congregational Church; she contributed to the Lovejoy Memorial |

1 | | Scholarship Fund and the United Negro College Fund; and |
2 | | WHEREAS, Lois Tyson was a valued and devoted volunteer and |
3 | | friend of the Democratic Party of Oak Park; and |
4 | | WHEREAS, Lois Tyson and her husband enjoyed traveling the |
5 | | world, hosting parties, and valuing their familial |
6 | | relationships and friendships; together, they also enrolled in |
7 | | the Minority Aging Research Study with Rush University's |
8 | | Alzheimer's Center, hoping their contributions would help |
9 | | improve healthcare for all Black Americans; and |
10 | | WHEREAS, Lois Tyson enjoyed cooking and baking, and she |
11 | | was known for her carrot cake; she also enjoyed shopping, |
12 | | dancing, and reading; she was especially skilled in writing; |
13 | | and |
14 | | WHEREAS, Lois Tyson was preceded in death by her husband; |
15 | | her parents, Odice and Susie; her siblings, Otis Granger Jr. |
16 | | and Bernadette Barry; and her nieces, Denise Michelle Tyson, |
17 | | Sheila Patterson, and Leslie Tyson; and |
18 | | WHEREAS, Lois Tyson is survived by her daughters, Kimberly |
19 | | Goldbaum and Nicole Tyson; her son-in-law, Nathan Goldbaum; |
20 | | her sisters, Mary S. Lauburg and Eloise Granger; her |
21 | | siblings-in-law, John Barry Sr. and Anita (Freddie) Carter; |

12 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it |

15 | | presented to the family of Lois Tyson as an expression of our |
