2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Edith C. Irwin of Springfield, who | ||||||
4 | passed away on August 4, 2023; and | ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Edith Irwin was born to Floyd and Lettie May | ||||||
6 | (Jackson) Fanning in Perry, Missouri on December 14, 1923; she | ||||||
7 | graduated from Perry High School and Gem City Business | ||||||
8 | College, both in 1941; she married John H. Irwin at the Perry | ||||||
9 | Christian Church in May 1949; and | ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Edith Irwin worked as a secretary for the | ||||||
11 | Illinois Public Health Department in Macomb from 1942 until | ||||||
12 | she was transferred to the Springfield office in 1946; once in | ||||||
13 | Springfield, she co-founded, along with Evelyn Brandt, the | ||||||
14 | Rural Youth organization for Sangamon County, providing | ||||||
15 | meeting opportunities for single men and women who shared a | ||||||
16 | common interest in agriculture; and | ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Along with her husband, Edith Irwin led the | ||||||
18 | Pleasant Plains Clovers 4-H Club for 33 years; she volunteered | ||||||
19 | as a judge for numerous 4-H county fairs throughout the years; | ||||||
20 | she was a great supporter of the IL Cooperative Extension | ||||||
21 | programs through the University of Illinois College of | ||||||
22 | Agriculture and the Sangamon County 4-H program,; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Edith Irwin served as a Sunday school teacher and | ||||||
2 | Vacation Bible School supervisor at Peter Cartwright Methodist | ||||||
3 | Church and Farmingdale Presbyterian Church for many years; she | ||||||
4 | was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church for 30 years; | ||||||
5 | and | ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Edith Irwin was an avid cook who won two Illinois | ||||||
7 | State Fair blue ribbons for her cakes; she also enjoyed | ||||||
8 | campaigning for political candidates; and | ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Edith Irwin was preceded in death by her husband; | ||||||
10 | her parents; her son, Scott Irwin; her sisters, Georgie Belshe | ||||||
11 | and Mary Cox; and her brothers, Thomas Fanning and Frank | ||||||
12 | Fanning; and | ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Edith Irwin is survived by her daughter, Cathy | ||||||
14 | (Thomas) Schwartz; her son, Peter (Kathy) Irwin; her | ||||||
15 | grandchildren, Jacquelyn (Alec) Windle, James Schwartz, and | ||||||
16 | Samantha Irwin; and her great-grandchild, Lincoln Windle; | ||||||
17 | therefore, be it | ||||||
18 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
19 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
20 | Edith C. Irwin and extend our sincere condolences to her | ||||||
21 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it |
