SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Ruby Lofton of Bolingbrook; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Ruby Lofton became civically engaged at the age
5of 15 in her native Mississippi, knocking on doors to motivate
6people to vote; she earned a degree from Mississippi Valley
7State University and her midwife license from the University
8of Mississippi Medical School; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Ruby Lofton was a stalwart member of the
10Democratic Party, having served as the first and second vice
11chair of the Will County Democratic Central Committee and
12DuPage Township, an executive board member of the Illinois
13Democratic Women of Will County, a founding member of the Will
14County Democratic Black Caucus, and an elected precinct
15committeeperson for decades; and
 
16    WHEREAS, While in Chicago, Ruby Lofton worked and
17volunteered in various capacities, including organizing
18community members to run for public office as she served as
19executive director of the Organization for a Better Austin,
20volunteering in Chicago schools as a PTA organizer, serving as
21director of the Human Needs Center, acting as chairman of the
22Blue-Ribbon Charity Committee with the International Masons

1and the Order of the Eastern Star, and working with
2Congressman Danny Davis on his annual back-to-school parade
3and picnic and his annual Christmas dinner for seniors; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Ruby Lofton was actively involved in the
5Bolingbrook community, where she became a resident in 1993;
6she was a member of the Bolingbrook Chamber of Commerce and the
7Bolingbrook Crime Stoppers, and she also served as a board
8member of the State of Illinois Crime Stoppers; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Ruby Lofton was presented with the National
10Unsung Hero's Award in Washington, D.C. in recognition of her
1120 years of volunteerism and was honored by Channel 2 News, CBS
12Chicago, with its Someone You Should Know award; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Ruby Lofton will be remembered for devoting
14herself to making her communities safer, stronger, and more
15inclusive; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Ruby Lofton was the wife of the late John Lofton,
17the mother of two children, and a good friend to many;
18therefore, be it
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
20ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
21Ruby Lofton and extend our sincere condolences to her family,

1friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further
 
2    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
3presented to the family of Ruby Lofton as an expression of our
4deepest sympathy.
