2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Ruby Lofton of Bolingbrook; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Ruby Lofton became civically engaged at the age | ||||||
5 | of 15 in her native Mississippi, knocking on doors to motivate | ||||||
6 | people to vote; she earned a degree from Mississippi Valley | ||||||
7 | State University and her midwife license from the University | ||||||
8 | of Mississippi Medical School; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Ruby Lofton was a stalwart member of the | ||||||
10 | Democratic Party, having served as the first and second vice | ||||||
11 | chair of the Will County Democratic Central Committee and | ||||||
12 | DuPage Township, an executive board member of the Illinois | ||||||
13 | Democratic Women of Will County, a founding member of the Will | ||||||
14 | County Democratic Black Caucus, and an elected precinct | ||||||
15 | committeeperson for decades; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, While in Chicago, Ruby Lofton worked and | ||||||
17 | volunteered in various capacities, including organizing | ||||||
18 | community members to run for public office as she served as | ||||||
19 | executive director of the Organization for a Better Austin, | ||||||
20 | volunteering in Chicago schools as a PTA organizer, serving as | ||||||
21 | director of the Human Needs Center, acting as chairman of the | ||||||
22 | Blue-Ribbon Charity Committee with the International Masons |

1 | and the Order of the Eastern Star, and working with | ||||||
2 | Congressman Danny Davis on his annual back-to-school parade | ||||||
3 | and picnic and his annual Christmas dinner for seniors; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Ruby Lofton was actively involved in the | ||||||
5 | Bolingbrook community, where she became a resident in 1993; | ||||||
6 | she was a member of the Bolingbrook Chamber of Commerce and the | ||||||
7 | Bolingbrook Crime Stoppers, and she also served as a board | ||||||
8 | member of the State of Illinois Crime Stoppers; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Ruby Lofton was presented with the National | ||||||
10 | Unsung Hero's Award in Washington, D.C. in recognition of her | ||||||
11 | 20 years of volunteerism and was honored by Channel 2 News, CBS | ||||||
12 | Chicago, with its Someone You Should Know award; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Ruby Lofton will be remembered for devoting | ||||||
14 | herself to making her communities safer, stronger, and more | ||||||
15 | inclusive; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Ruby Lofton was the wife of the late John Lofton, | ||||||
17 | the mother of two children, and a good friend to many; | ||||||
18 | therefore, be it
| ||||||
19 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
20 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
21 | Ruby Lofton and extend our sincere condolences to her family, |

1 | friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further
| ||||||
2 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
3 | presented to the family of Ruby Lofton as an expression of our | ||||||
4 | deepest sympathy.
