2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of John Robert Bagley of Pekin, who | ||||||
4 | passed away on June 10, 2023; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, John Bagley was born to Chester and Edna Mae | ||||||
6 | (Harper) Bagley in Kirksville, Missouri on June 24, 1937; he | ||||||
7 | attended Kirksville public schools and graduated from | ||||||
8 | Kirksville High School in 1955; he received his Bachelor of | ||||||
9 | Arts in Economics from the University of Missouri at Columbia | ||||||
10 | in 1959, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, | ||||||
11 | Scabbard & Bladewhile, and the baseball program; he later | ||||||
12 | tried out for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1960; he married Mary | ||||||
13 | Laura Frings at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Pekin on | ||||||
14 | January 28, 1961; he earned his Juris Doctor from the | ||||||
15 | University of Michigan in 1962; he was inducted into service | ||||||
16 | in the U.S. Army at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, and he served honorably | ||||||
17 | from June 1962 to October 1965; he attained the rank of captain | ||||||
18 | and served in the Judge Advocate General's Corps; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, John Bagley was admitted to the Missouri Bar in | ||||||
20 | 1962 and the Illinois Bar in 1966; he began practicing law in | ||||||
21 | Pekin in November 1965; he became a partner in the firm of | ||||||
22 | Frings, Hoffman & Bagley in 1967, which subsequently became | ||||||
23 | Bagley & Miller with the addition of Louis E. Miller; his areas |

| |||||||
1 | of concentration were banking law, estate planning, and | ||||||
2 | corporate law; he served as corporate counsel, director, and | ||||||
3 | shareholder of the Herget Financial Corporation and Herget | ||||||
4 | National Bank from 1977 until its sale in 2015; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, John Bagley was a member of the Illinois State | ||||||
6 | Bar Association and the Missouri Bar Association; he belonged | ||||||
7 | to the Tazewell County Bar Association and served as its | ||||||
8 | president in from 1972 to 1973; he was a member of the Pekin | ||||||
9 | Country Club and was a past member of its Board of Governors; | ||||||
10 | he was also a member of the Olde Florida Golf Club in Naples, | ||||||
11 | Florida, where he spent the winter months; he served as | ||||||
12 | uncompensated counsel for the St. Paul United Church of | ||||||
13 | Christ, the Tazewell Animal Protective Society, Tazewell Youth | ||||||
14 | Hockey, and the Pekin Day Care Center; and | ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, John Bagley was community-minded and helped raise | ||||||
16 | funds for the Boy Scouts, TAPS, the Heart Fund, Tazewell Youth | ||||||
17 | Hockey, Christian Civic Outreach, and the Leadership Circle of | ||||||
18 | the United Way of Pekin; he was a regular supporter of St. Jude | ||||||
19 | Children's Research Hospital; he made anonymous contributions | ||||||
20 | for various community park projects in Pekin and Kirksville, | ||||||
21 | Missouri; and | ||||||
22 | WHEREAS, As a child, John Bagley attended First | ||||||
23 | Presbyterian Church in Kirksville, Missouri and was a member |

| |||||||
1 | of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Pekin; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, John Bagley loved snow skiing; he also enjoyed | ||||||
3 | golfing, water skiing, boating, clay shooting, and keeping up | ||||||
4 | to date with the latest sports cars; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, John Bagley was preceded in death by his parents; | ||||||
6 | his sister, Carolyn Ann Harding; and his sister-in-law, Bettie | ||||||
7 | Laier; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, John Bagley is survived by his wife; his nephew, | ||||||
9 | John David (Rebecca) Harding; his niece, Susan E. (Mark) | ||||||
10 | Sells; six great-nieces and great-nephews; his sister-in-law, | ||||||
11 | Charlotte Cardiff; his brother-in-law, Clyde Laier; and his | ||||||
12 | niece by marriage, Becky (Mark) Beasley and her daughter; | ||||||
13 | therefore, be it

14 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
15 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
| ||||||
16 | John Robert Pekin and extend our sincere
condolences to his | ||||||
17 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved
him; and be it | ||||||
18 | further
| ||||||
19 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
| ||||||
20 | presented to the family of John Bagley as an expression of
our | ||||||
21 | deepest sympathy.
