| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to extend | ||||||
3 | their heartfelt congratulations to Highland Community College | ||||||
4 | on the occasion of the college's 60th anniversary; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Highland Community College's main campus is | ||||||
6 | located on 140 acres in Freeport, Illinois and is recognized | ||||||
7 | by the Illinois Community College Board as an accredited | ||||||
8 | institution of higher learning; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, In 1961, a local referendum was passed by a three | ||||||
10 | to one margin calling for the establishment of a comprehensive | ||||||
11 | community college in the Freeport area; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, In 1962, 229 students began attending evening | ||||||
13 | classes held at the Freeport Senior High School, and in 1964, | ||||||
14 | money was raised to purchase local farmland where the college | ||||||
15 | now stands; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, In 1968, voters approved a plan for the current | ||||||
17 | campus; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Highland Community College's main campus in | ||||||
19 | Freeport is an institution of exceptional quality and is an | ||||||
20 | outstanding and affordable resource for those living in |

1 | Northwest Illinois; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Highland Community College offers comprehensive | ||||||
3 | academic programming with over 70 degrees and certificates, | ||||||
4 | which include a wide variety of vocational degrees and | ||||||
5 | certificates and general education courses designed to meet | ||||||
6 | the individual educational goals of every student; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Highland Community College also offers adult | ||||||
8 | education classes that include GED and ESL classes; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Highland Community College offers men's and | ||||||
10 | women's athletics through 12 teams that proudly wear the | ||||||
11 | Highland Cougar uniform; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Highland Community College offers an array of | ||||||
13 | clubs and extracurricular activities for students; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, The school's mission is built around meeting the | ||||||
15 | needs of the greater northwest Illinois community through | ||||||
16 | quality educational and cultural programs; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Highland Community College is a center of | ||||||
18 | cultural opportunity with theater, arts, music, literature, | ||||||
19 | and lecture series; and

1 | WHEREAS, A primary focus of the educational programming at | ||||||
2 | the school is preparing students to transfer to a | ||||||
3 | baccalaureate or professional, degree-granting institution; | ||||||
4 | and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Highland Community College supports regional | ||||||
6 | economic development through partnerships with businesses, | ||||||
7 | industry, chambers of commerce, units of local government, and | ||||||
8 | other educational institutions; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Highland Community College operates through core | ||||||
10 | values of integrity, compassion, and respect; therefore, be it
| ||||||
11 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
12 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate | ||||||
13 | Highland Community College on the celebration of the school's | ||||||
14 | 60th anniversary; and be it further
| ||||||
15 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
16 | presented to Highland Community College as an expression of | ||||||
17 | our appreciation and respect.
