2 | | WHEREAS, Pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of |
3 | | cancer-related deaths in the U.S. and is projected to be the |
4 | | second leading cause of cancer-related deaths by 2030; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers |
6 | | and has the lowest five-year survival rate at just 10%; and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, In 2023, an estimated 60,430 U.S. residents will |
8 | | be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and more than 48,220 will |
9 | | die from the disease; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, Due to increased awareness, pancreatic cancer |
11 | | survival rates have been improving; however, the disease is |
12 | | still considered largely incurable; with all stages of |
13 | | pancreatic cancer combined, the one-year relative survival |
14 | | rate is 20% and the five-year rate is 9%; and
|
15 | | WHEREAS, The problem is that high-risk people are not |
16 | | being screened in the early and potentially curable stages of |
17 | | pancreatic cancer; and
|
18 | | WHEREAS, Risk factors can include chronic or hereditary |
19 | | pancreatitis, obesity, regular consumption of high dietary |
20 | | fats, alcohol abuse, smoking, family history, age, and |
