SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that the Illinois General
3Assembly pays honor and respect to those who have served our
4country and, in doing so, have made the ultimate sacrifice for
5our nation; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Thomas William Hollis was born in
7Macoupin County on May 24, 1948; and
 
8    WHEREAS, LCpl Hollis enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and
9was deployed as a rifleman to Vietnam on March 13, 1967; and
 
10    WHEREAS, LCpl Hollis attained the rank of lance corporal
11and was attached to the 3rd Marine Division, 3rd Recon
12Battalion, B Company; and
 
13    WHEREAS, LCpl Hollis was killed in action in the Quang Tri
14Province of South Vietnam on January 28, 1968; and
 
15    WHEREAS, LCpl Hollis was awarded the Purple Heart, the
16Combat Action Ribbon, the Marksmanship Badge, the National
17Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Vietnam
18Service Medal, the Marine Corps Presidential Unit Citation,
19the Vietnam Gallantry Cross, the Marine Corps Good Conduct
20Medal, and the Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal; his name can

1be found on Panel 35e, Line 54 of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial
2in Washington D.C.; therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
4ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF
5REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate Route 16
6in Gillespie from Route 4 to Kelly Street as the "LCpl Thomas
7W. Hollis Memorial Highway"; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
9is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
10State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
11giving notice of the name "LCpl Thomas W. Hollis Memorial
12Highway"; and be it further
 
13    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
14presented to the family of LCpl Hollis, the Mayor of
15Gillespie, and the Secretary of the Illinois Department of
16Transportation.
