HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Master Sergeant Jennifer
4Smit of the Illinois State Police on the occasion of receiving
5the 2024 Danville Noon Rotary Vocational Service Person of the
6Year Award; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The Danville Noon Rotary Vocational Service
8Person of the Year Award is presented to a local individual who
9best exemplifies the ideals of Rotary and the practice of high
10ethical standards in their chosen vocation; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Master Sergeant Smit has pursued a career in law
12enforcement since she accepted the call to serve the citizens
13of Danville as a police officer in 2014; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Master Sergeant Smit was an award-winning
15student-athlete and academic-honors recipient while attending
16Bishop McNamara High School in Kankakee and DePaul University,
17and she also excelled in completing her police academy
18studies; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Master Sergeant Smit, who possesses a master's
20degree in education, previously served as a seventh-grade
21science teacher at North Ridge Middle School in Danville for

1nearly three years; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Master Sergeant Smit served as an officer at the
3Danville Police Department for three years before expanding
4her outreach by taking a position as a trooper with the
5Illinois State Police, where she was promoted to sergeant in
6less than five years and then to master sergeant in 2024; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Master Sergeant Smit was heavily endorsed by her
8supervisor, Illinois State Police Master Sergeant Kenneth
9Massey, to receive the 2024 Danville Noon Rotary Vocational
10Service Person of the Year Award, considering her to be an
11officer and a sergeant worthy of recognition; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Master Sergeant Smit further serves the community
13by donating her free time through volunteering, including
14assisting the Danville Area Community College (DACC)
15Foundation with scholarships and supporting the Women's
16Survival Resource Center with its annual Walk a Mile in Her
17Shoes fundraising event; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Master Sergeant Smit shows compassion to everyone
19in the community with whom she interacts and has helped people
20understand that just because officers are charged with
21enforcing the law that they are not to be feared; therefore, be

1    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
2HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
3we congratulate Master Sergeant Jennifer Smit of the Illinois
4State Police on receiving the 2024 Danville Noon Rotary
5Vocational Service Person of the Year Award and commend her
6for the positive impact she has made and continues to make in
7her community; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9presented to Master Sergeant Smit as an expression of our
10esteem and respect.
