2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Heather |
4 | | Marie McMeekan of Peoria Heights, formerly of Macomb, who |
5 | | passed away on October 6, 2024; and |
6 | | WHEREAS, Heather McMeekan was born to George and Iris |
7 | | (Petersen) Platt in Park Ridge on August 9, 1968; and |
8 | | WHEREAS, Heather McMeekan taught hundreds of students |
9 | | during her years as the Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) |
10 | | program coordinator at Western Illinois University (WIU); she |
11 | | was the lead instructor for EMTv, a television series |
12 | | providing continuing education for Illinois EMT-Basics |
13 | | (EMT-Bs); she was also the founding faculty advisor for |
14 | | Western EMS, a student-run Emergency Medical Services (EMS) |
15 | | service on the WIU campus; and |
16 | | WHEREAS, Heather McMeekan was a member of the Unitarian |
17 | | Universalist Fellowship in Macomb and the Unitarian |
18 | | Universalist Church in Peoria; she served on the church's |
19 | | Women's Connection Council for six years, introduced other |
20 | | members to her love of kites and drumming, and led several |
21 | | workshops through the fellowship; and |

1 | | WHEREAS, Heather McMeekan, a dedicated community activist |
2 | | and organizer, served as co-president of the Peoria Chapter of |
3 | | the National Organization of Women; she was the founder and |
4 | | president of the Democratic Women of McDonough County and was |
5 | | a founding member of Indivisible West Central Illinois and the |
6 | | Racial Justice Coalition of West Central Illinois; and |
7 | | WHEREAS, Heather McMeekan loved her children, kites, |
8 | | drumming, painting, sculpting, and scrap-booking; she loved |
9 | | sharing her interests with others and did so through the |
10 | | foundation of the Macomb Kite Festival, the Macomb Community |
11 | | Drum Circle, Macomb Pride, and many other organizations; and |
12 | | WHEREAS, Heather McMeekan was preceded in death by her |
13 | | parents; and |
14 | | WHEREAS, Heather McMeekan is survived by her children, |
15 | | Iris McMeekan and Kellen McMeekan; her sisters, Anne (Tom) |
16 | | Atherton and Laura Croft; and her ex-husband, Peter McMeekan; |
17 | | therefore, be it |
18 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
19 | | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
20 | | we mourn the passing of Heather Marie McMeekan and extend our |
21 | | sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew |
22 | | and loved her; and be it further |
