2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to congratulate the Christian County | ||||||
4 | Agricultural Fair on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; | ||||||
5 | and | ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, On April 29, 1924, the Christian County | ||||||
7 | Agricultural Fair was founded by Phil S. Haner, Robert Carlin, | ||||||
8 | Louis Tolliver, and Edward Alton, who rented and held the fair | ||||||
9 | on 40 acres of land located at the west edge of Taylorville | ||||||
10 | from 1924 through 1935; and | ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, After watching the Christian County Agricultural | ||||||
12 | Fair grow in popularity over its first decade, the four | ||||||
13 | business partners purchased the fairgrounds for $5,000 in | ||||||
14 | 1935; and | ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, In its early days, the Christian Country | ||||||
16 | Agricultural Fair was home to the most outstanding society | ||||||
17 | horse shows in the Midwest and was the largest society horse | ||||||
18 | show for county fairs in the State of Illinois; and | ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, The Christian County Agricultural Fair also | ||||||
20 | sponsored harness and running races, as the track was | ||||||
21 | considered one of the best in the United States and was a |

1 | member of the "Top Line" race circuit; and | ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The Christian County Agricultural Fair held many | ||||||
3 | other events during this time, including the Western Horse | ||||||
4 | Show and beef cattle, dairy cattle, hog, and sheep shows; in | ||||||
5 | its early years, it also hosted draft and mule shows and horse | ||||||
6 | pulling contests prior to the advent of tractor pulling | ||||||
7 | contests seen today; and | ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Over the past 100 years, the Christian County | ||||||
9 | Agricultural Fair has been made possible thanks to hundreds of | ||||||
10 | Christian County residents giving thousands of hours of their | ||||||
11 | time, making the fair one of the finest in Illinois; | ||||||
12 | therefore, be it | ||||||
13 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
14 | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
15 | we congratulate the Christian County Agricultural Fair on its | ||||||
16 | centennial anniversary, and we wish the fair continued success | ||||||
17 | in the future; and be it further | ||||||
18 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
19 | presented to the Christian County Agricultural Fair as an | ||||||
20 | expression of our esteem and respect. |
