2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to recognize the Niles Historical and | ||||||
4 | Cultural Center (NHCC) building on the occasion of its 100th | ||||||
5 | anniversary; and | ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Located at 8970 North Milwaukee Avenue, the NHCC | ||||||
7 | building is one of the oldest municipal structures in the | ||||||
8 | Village of Niles and serves as a vital piece of the village's | ||||||
9 | history; although it does not have landmark status, it is a | ||||||
10 | local landmark in the community; and | ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, The NHCC building was originally built in the | ||||||
12 | unincorporated Maine Township to house the Cook County Highway | ||||||
13 | Police Station #1, with its construction beginning in 1923 and | ||||||
14 | the police station opening in 1924; and | ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, The NHCC building was later renamed the Cook | ||||||
16 | County Sheriff's Police Department, serving as its | ||||||
17 | headquarters until 1984, and during this time, the police | ||||||
18 | department worked many high-profile cases, including the | ||||||
19 | arrest of serial killer Richard Speck in 1966, the John Wayne | ||||||
20 | Gacy case of the late 1970s, and the horrific crash of American | ||||||
21 | Flight 191 at O'Hare Airport on the afternoon of May 25, 1979; | ||||||

1 | WHEREAS, The NHCC building began its transformation into | ||||||
2 | the Niles Historical Museum with the relocation of the Niles | ||||||
3 | Historical Society's artifacts from a hallway at the Trident | ||||||
4 | Center to 8970 North Milwaukee Avenue on March 25, 1985, and | ||||||
5 | the museum hosted its grand opening and dedication on October | ||||||
6 | 25, 1986; and | ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Today, the NHCC building remains the headquarters | ||||||
8 | of the Niles Historical Society and is open to visitors | ||||||
9 | year-round with no cost for admission thanks to donations that | ||||||
10 | fund its programs, exhibits, collections, and research; and | ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, The NHCC building's 100th anniversary in 2024 is | ||||||
12 | a time to honor the political, cultural, and historical | ||||||
13 | significance that it has had on the Village of Niles and | ||||||
14 | suburban communities in Cook County; therefore, be it | ||||||
15 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
16 | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
17 | we recognize the Niles Historical and Cultural Center (NHCC) | ||||||
18 | building on its 100th anniversary and its importance to the | ||||||
19 | Village of Niles and Cook County; and be it further | ||||||
20 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
21 | presented to the Niles Historical Society (NHS) as an |
