2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Philip | ||||||
4 | Hackman "Phil" Good, who passed away on February 20, 2024; and | ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Phil Good was born in Kewanee on February 7, | ||||||
6 | 1935; he was raised in Kewanee and graduated from Kewanee High | ||||||
7 | School in 1952; he received a degree in economics from | ||||||
8 | Colorado College; he served in the U.S. Army Reserve, | ||||||
9 | achieving the rank of captain and commander of Company C, | ||||||
10 | 338th Regiment, 85th Division before being honorably | ||||||
11 | discharged in 1964; and | ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Phil Good joined his father, Everett, in the | ||||||
13 | family furniture business, Good's Furniture and Mattress, in | ||||||
14 | 1957; he became the third generation owner of the family | ||||||
15 | business established by his grandfather, Elmer S. Good, in | ||||||
16 | downtown Kewanee on February 14, 1895; and | ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Through vision and determination, Phil Good | ||||||
18 | transformed Good's Furniture and Mattress into a thriving | ||||||
19 | enterprise, becoming a cornerstone of downtown Kewanee; his | ||||||
20 | pioneering spirit and marketing astuteness revolutionized | ||||||
21 | retail advertising, propelling the store into regional | ||||||
22 | prominence and establishing Kewanee as a destination for |

1 | shoppers; he and his wife, Mary Heberer Good, transformed a | ||||||
2 | hometown family business into an iconic enterprise known for | ||||||
3 | its innovation, customer-centric approach, and commitment to | ||||||
4 | the community; and | ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Phil Good's dedication to the community extended | ||||||
6 | beyond business; he generously supported philanthropic efforts | ||||||
7 | and initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of life in | ||||||
8 | Kewanee, particularly in education, and he remained an | ||||||
9 | advocate for the revitalization of Kewanee through investing | ||||||
10 | heavily in the community's well-being; and | ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Phil Good's leadership and innovation were | ||||||
12 | recognized by the Illinois Retail Merchants Association | ||||||
13 | (IRMA), which named him Illinois Retailer of the Year in 1998 | ||||||
14 | and Illinois Retailer of the Century in 2000; and | ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Phil Good made an indelible mark on Kewanee, its | ||||||
16 | residents, and the retail industry in Illinois, and he leaves | ||||||
17 | a legacy of love, integrity, and entrepreneurship; and | ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Phil Good's entrepreneurial spirit will continue | ||||||
19 | to live on through his son and daughter-in-law, Phil and | ||||||
20 | Kaleigh Good Jr., who now operate Good's Furniture and | ||||||
21 | Mattress in its 129th year, ensuring that this groundbreaking | ||||||
22 | generational business remains a mainstay of Kewanee for many |

2 | WHEREAS, Phil Good is survived by his wife, Mary Heberer | ||||||
3 | Good; his brother, David (Rosemary) Good; his children, John | ||||||
4 | Good, Jean (Reed) Brickell, Mary Anne (Bob) Dybdal, and Phil | ||||||
5 | (Kaleigh) Good Jr.; nine grandchildren; and 15 | ||||||
6 | great-grandchildren; therefore, be it | ||||||
7 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
8 | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
9 | we mourn the passing of Philip Hackman "Phil" Good and extend | ||||||
10 | our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who | ||||||
11 | knew and loved him; and be it further | ||||||
12 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
13 | presented to the family of Phil Good as an expression of our | ||||||
14 | deepest sympathy. |
