HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Variants of the SCN2A gene are the leading
3single-gene cause of neurodevelopmental disorders such as
4autism, childhood seizures, and intellectual disabilities; and
 
5    WHEREAS, SCN2A disorders are also associated with a
6spectrum of syndromes ranging from severe, life-threatening
7conditions to developmental delays, including sleep
8disturbances, gastrointestinal dysfunctions, movement
9disorders, pain, and dysautonomia; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Research predicts that approximately one in 9,000
11people will be diagnosed with SCN2A-related disorders; and
 
12    WHEREAS, While SCN2A-related disorders can be easily
13identified by DNA testing, SCN2A-related disorders frequently
14go undetected due to a lack of awareness, even within the
15medical community; and
 
16    WHEREAS, The field of study of SCN2A-related disorders is
17growing, but additional studies are needed to develop
18therapies and treatments; and
 
19    WHEREAS, International SCN2A Awareness Day is held
20annually on February 24th; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
2HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
3we declare February 24, 2024 as SCN2A Awareness Day in the
4State of Illinois; and be it further
 
5    RESOLVED, That we encourage all residents of Illinois to
6support any related activities and wear purple, blue, or green
7on this day to bring awareness of these disorders and the need
8for treatment.
