HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Ninety-four duly elected county coroners, seven
3duly elected county sheriff-coroners, and one duly appointed
4county medical examiner, along with their respective staff
5members, provide medicolegal death investigation services to
6the people of the State of Illinois and visitors to our state;
7and
 
8    WHEREAS, These medicolegal death investigation
9professionals are essential to the criminal justice system,
10public safety, and the public health of the State of Illinois;
11and
 
12    WHEREAS, These medicolegal death investigation
13professionals diligently perform their duties making inquiry
14into the manner and cause of an individual's death under
15physically and emotionally demanding conditions, including,
16but not limited to, the deaths of children, the current opiate
17epidemic, the recent COVID-19 pandemic, victims of violence at
18the hands of another, and a never-ending litany of deaths that
19occur under harsh, unexpected, and other tragic circumstances;
20and
 
21    WHEREAS, These medicolegal death investigation
22professionals serve as an advocate for the deceased, give

1voices to those who have been forever stilled, and strive to
2seek answers to extremely difficult questions, serving the
3needs of the survivors left behind and the good of the public
4welfare; and
 
5    WHEREAS, These medicolegal death investigation
6professionals pursue further training and education through
7the Illinois Coroner Training Board, the Illinois Coroners and
8Medical Examiners Association, the International Association
9of Coroners and Medical Examiners, the American Board of
10Medicolegal Death Investigators, the National Association of
11Medical Examiners, and a host of other related organizations
12to continue their professional development as skilled,
13qualified, ethical, and knowledgeable investigators, fiercely
14loyal to the mission they serve that so often goes without
15recognition or accolade; therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
17HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
18we declare the week of January 21 through January 27, 2024 as
19Medicolegal Death Investigation Professionals Week in honor of
20the coroners, deputy coroners, medical examiners, support and
21ancillary staff, forensic pathologists, and medicolegal death
22investigators for their ongoing commitment of service to the
23citizens of Illinois and their communities; and be it further

1    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2presented to the Illinois Coroners and Medical Examiners
3Association as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
