HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Gerald W. "Jerry"
4Adelmann on the occasion of his retirement from serving as
5head of the environmental conservation organization Openlands;
6and
 
7    WHEREAS, Gerald Adelmann received undergraduate and
8graduate degrees at Georgetown University and George
9Washington University; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Gerald Adelmann joined Openlands in 1980 to
11coordinate a special program that led to the creation of the
12Illinois and Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor, the
13first federal land designation of its kind; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Inspired by this model, Gerald Adelmann launched
15the Canal Corridor Association in 1982 to work within the
16heritage corridor; and
 
17    WHEREAS, In 1988, Gerald Adelmann was appointed as head of
18Openlands; under his guidance, Openlands launched the 21st
19Century Open Space Plan, which called for expanded parklands,
20greenways, and trails in northeastern Illinois and the
21surrounding region; and

1    WHEREAS, Gerald Adelmann played an instrumental role in
2establishing the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie and formed
3conservation partnerships across the region; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Gerald Adelmann has been involved in conservation
5and historic preservation projects in China since the early
61990s; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Since 2008, Gerald Adelmann has served as an
8international advisor to the Yangon Heritage Trust in Myanmar,
9advising on regional planning and sustainable development; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Gerald Adelmann lectures extensively throughout
11the United States and abroad; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Gerald Adelmann is the vice chair of the Center
13for Humans and Nature and an emeritus member of the National
14Board of Advisors of the National Trust for Historic
15Preservation; he also chairs the City of Chicago's Nature and
16Wildlife Committee and is a member of several other boards and
17commissions; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Gerald Adelmann's conservation and preservation
19work has earned him prestigious accolades, including the
20Hutchinson Medal from the Chicago Botanic Garden in 2012 and

1an honorary doctorate from Lewis University; he is also an
2honorary member of the American Association of Landscape
3Architects; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Gerald Adelmann has managed to save large swaths
5of the local landscape for future generations; therefore, be
6it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
8HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
9we congratulate Gerald W. "Jerry" Adelmann on the occasion of
10his retirement from serving as president and CEO of the
11environmental conservation organization Openlands; and be it
12further
 
13    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14presented to Gerald Adelmann as a symbol of our esteem and
15respect.
