2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate Rebecca Hermann, a |
4 | | computer science teacher at John M. Palmer Elementary School, |
5 | | on the occasion of being named a 2023 Amazon Future Engineer |
6 | | Teacher of the Year Award recipient; and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, The Amazon Future Engineer Teacher of the Year |
8 | | Awards celebrate teachers who work diligently to help students |
9 | | discover the possibilities that computer science and robotics |
10 | | bring for the future; in addition to being formally |
11 | | recognized, award recipients receive $25,000 to expand |
12 | | computer science or robotics education at their school; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, Teachers are selected for demonstrating a |
14 | | dedication to educational equity in underserved communities, |
15 | | their commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion within |
16 | | computer science education, and displaying instructional |
17 | | excellence and a record of student achievement; and
|
18 | | WHEREAS, Rebecca Hermann is one of ten teachers recognized |
19 | | this year, and she is the only teacher selected from the State |
20 | | of Illinois; and
|
21 | | WHEREAS, Rebecca Hermann, an alumna of Palmer Elementary |

1 | | herself, has been teaching at the school since 2012; as part of |
2 | | the award, she has committed to remain at Palmer Elementary |
3 | | and teach computer science or robotics for the 2023-2024 |
4 | | school year; and

5 | | WHEREAS, For Rebecca Hermann, receiving the Amazon Future |
6 | | Engineer Teacher of the Year Award is not the first time her |
7 | | dedication to her students has been acknowledged; in 2019, she |
8 | | was one of 16 teachers honored by the Chicago Bears and Symetra |
9 | | with a Heroes in the Classroom Award, which recognizes |
10 | | teachers for their ability to balance the core curriculum with |
11 | | students' individual needs, invest in their long
term success, |
12 | | and build trust among students, parents, and the community; |
13 | | and
|
14 | | WHEREAS, Rebecca Hermann has been the embodiment of Palmer |
15 | | Elementary's mission of empowering students to find value in |
16 | | their individuality and sharing their talents within the |
17 | | community, not only by employing lessons on technical |
18 | | instruction such as 3-D printing, circuit board building, and |
19 | | robotics but also by ensuring her students understand digital |
20 | | citizenship and their role in using technology now and in the |
21 | | future; therefore, be it
