HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Based out of the Noble-Seymour-Crippen House, the
3Norwood Park Historical Society (NPHS) was established on
4September 6, 1973 to preserve, protect, and share the history
5of Norwood Park; and
 
6    WHEREAS, An entirely volunteer-run operation, the NPHS
7maintains a local history museum, archives, exhibits, and an
8event space on the northwest side of Chicago; and
 
9    WHEREAS, The NPHS hosts a variety of events, including
10general interest programs, game nights, and knit and crochet
11nights, along with other special events; and
 
12    WHEREAS, NPHS provides information on the evolution of
13Norwood Park as a prairie, farm community, village, and now
14vibrant city neighborhood; and
 
15    WHEREAS, In 1831, Mark Noble Sr. arrived in the Chicago
16Settlement from Yorkshire, England, and he and Margaret Noble
17purchased real estate, including 150 acres of prairie that is
18now Norwood Park; and
 
19    WHEREAS, The Nobles built their home on Union Ridge, being
20the first non-indigenous residents in the area, and their sawn

1lumber home is the oldest existing house in Chicago; and
 
2    WHEREAS, In 1868, Thomas Seymour of Chicago's Board of
3Trade and his wife, Louise, purchased the house and adjacent
4property and then enlarged it with an Italianate addition; and
 
5    WHEREAS, In 1916, Charlotte and Stuart Crippen purchased
6the Noble-Seymour House and adjoining property as a summer
7residence and added plumbing and electricity, making Norwood
8Park their permanent residence; and
 
9    WHEREAS, On New Year's Eve 1987, Agnes Crippen, the
10daughter-in-law of Charlotte and Stuart, and her children sold
11the house and remaining land to the Norwood Park Historical
12Society, bringing a beloved addition for the NPHS in the new
13year; and
 
14    WHEREAS, The NPHS made its headquarters in the
15Noble-Seymour-Crippen House, including a museum, archives, and
16meeting space; and
 
17    WHEREAS, On May 11, 1988, the Noble-Seymour-Crippen House
18was designated a City of Chicago Historical Landmark, and on
19August 10, 2000, it was listed on the National Register of
20Historic Places; and

1    WHEREAS, Exhibits in the museum maintained by the NPHS
2include Margaret Crippen's 20th century period-decorated
3bedroom, photographs and maps displaying Norwood Park's
4history, "Vanishing Norwood Park" to show the community's
5changes over the years, and "Can You Dig It?" with artifacts
6uncovered from the residence's lawn; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The Norwood Park Historical Society has preserved
8the history of Norwood Park for half a century and enriched its
9community by connecting residents with their neighborhood's
10history; therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
12HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
13we congratulate the Norwood Park Historical Society on 50
14years of establishment.
