2 | WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® was | ||||||
3 | founded on January 15, 1908, with the mission to promote unity | ||||||
4 | and friendship among college women, to study and help | ||||||
5 | alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to | ||||||
6 | improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive | ||||||
7 | interest in college life, and to be of "Service to All | ||||||
8 | Mankind"; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, In 1915, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. hosted | ||||||
10 | its first political action conference with Illinois | ||||||
11 | Congressman and human rights activist Martin B. Madden as the | ||||||
12 | speaker; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Through the years, establishing headquarters in | ||||||
14 | Chicago since 1949, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.'s | ||||||
15 | function has become more complex, expanding to mobilize | ||||||
16 | members worldwide for advocacy and service projects to improve | ||||||
17 | socioeconomic, racial, political, and environmental | ||||||
18 | conditions; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.'s diverse | ||||||
20 | collaborative work throughout the United States, the | ||||||
21 | Caribbean, Europe, Africa, and the United Arab Emirates | ||||||
22 | integrates an elevated level of personal engagement with the |

1 | strong bonds of sisterhood and a productive network of | ||||||
2 | community partners; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.'s annual event | ||||||
4 | is an opportunity for members to speak with local lawmakers, | ||||||
5 | engage in workshops, and advocate for critical issues such as | ||||||
6 | Black maternal health, education, and suicide prevention; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Illinois is home to 43 Alpha Kappa Alpha | ||||||
8 | Sorority, Inc. chapters, 15 of which are located on college | ||||||
9 | and university campuses and 28 active alumnae chapters are | ||||||
10 | located in communities throughout the State; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, The Central Region is home to 95 empowered and | ||||||
12 | engaged chapters, serving Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, | ||||||
13 | Minnesota, Southeastern Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, | ||||||
14 | and Wisconsin; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Currently, one member of Alpha Kappa Alpha | ||||||
16 | Sorority, Inc. is serving in the Illinois State Legislature, | ||||||
17 | Senator Mattie Hunter; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Currently, one member of Alpha Kappa Alpha | ||||||
19 | Sorority, Inc. is serving in the Illinois Executive Branch, | ||||||
20 | 48th Lieutenant Governor Julianna Stratton; and

1 | WHEREAS, On May 10, 2023, Illinois members of Alpha Kappa | ||||||
2 | Alpha Sorority, Inc. will participate in "AKA Day at the | ||||||
3 | Illinois State Capital"; therefore, be it
| ||||||
4 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
5 | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
6 | we declare May 10, 2023 as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, | ||||||
7 | Incorporated® Day in the State of Illinois; and be it further
| ||||||
8 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||
9 | presented to the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Nu Omicron | ||||||
10 | Omega Chapter and Tau Chi Chapters in recognition of all | ||||||
11 | Illinois chapters.
