2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives wish to commend Alderperson Sophia King on her |
4 | | service to the 4th Ward as a member of the Chicago City |
5 | | Council; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, Ald. King grew up in Evanston, with her family |
7 | | hailing from the Mississippi Delta; she attended schools in |
8 | | Evanston and in Jackson, Mississippi; she earned her |
9 | | bachelor's degree in Chemistry from the University of Illinois |
10 | | and her master's degree in Education and Social Policy from |
11 | | Northwestern University; she has been a resident of the 4th |
12 | | Ward for over 35 years; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, Professionally, Ald. King has been instrumental |
14 | | in opening doors of educational opportunity within her |
15 | | immediate and the greater Chicago community; she worked as an |
16 | | educator and administrator at the Latin School of Chicago, |
17 | | where she diversified classes; she helped found the Ariel |
18 | | Community Academy, a public school established to provide |
19 | | North Kenwood-Oakland residents with a high quality education; |
20 | | she served as deputy director of Sports Administration and |
21 | | Facilities Management at Chicago Public Schools from 2001 to |
22 | | 2003, during which she managed a staff of 30 and a budget of |
23 | | $12 million; and

1 | | WHEREAS, Ald. King has served the 4th Ward on the Chicago |
2 | | City Council since 2016, representing parts of Downtown, the |
3 | | South Loop, Bronzeville, Kenwood, and Hyde Park, and was |
4 | | reelected in 2019; during her tenure, she has led the 4th Ward |
5 | | with transparency and a focus on service, serving as a voice |
6 | | for those who have historically lacked a champion in City Hall |
7 | | and as an advocate for parity; and
|
8 | | WHEREAS, Ald. King has successfully implemented a number |
9 | | of positive changes in the 4th Ward and the City of Chicago, |
10 | | such as leading the fight for a $15 minimum wage in Chicago |
11 | | through her Raise Chicago Ordinance, the passage of which gave |
12 | | 400,000 Chicagoans a raise and lifted 100,000 Chicagoans out |
13 | | of poverty; she has worked on the front lines on crime and |
14 | | public safety issues, fighting to reform the Chicago Police |
15 | | Department (CPD) through the creation of the Civilian Office |
16 | | of Police Accountability and ensuring the CPD has the |
17 | | resources and personnel to better stop the violence; she has |
18 | | encouraged firms that do business in her ward to go above and |
19 | | beyond the city's goals on minority hiring, with minority |
20 | | participation often exceeding 40%; she has also successfully |
21 | | secured millions in funding for education and infrastructure |
22 | | projects; and
|
23 | | WHEREAS, Ald. King has offered a number of constituent |

1 | | services to 4th Ward residents, including listening and |
2 | | responding to community needs, improving efficiency in |
3 | | communication and access, sponsoring quarterly senior socials |
4 | | and an annual senior ball, and hosting Alderman On the Block |
5 | | events across the ward; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, Ald. King has served as chair of the Chicago City |
7 | | Council's Progressive Reform Caucus and as vice chair of the |
8 | | Committee on Education and Child Development and several joint |
9 | | committees; she has also served as a member of the Committee on |
10 | | Budget and Government Operations, the Committee on Committees |
11 | | and Rules, the Committee on Contracting Oversight and Equity, |
12 | | the Committee on Finance, the Committee on Housing and Real |
13 | | Estate, the Committee on Pedestrian and Traffic Safety, the |
14 | | Committee on Special Events, Cultural Affairs and Recreation, |
15 | | the Committee on Transportation and Public Way, and several |
16 | | joint committees; and

17 | | WHEREAS, Ald. King has further assisted her community |
18 | | through involvement in several organizations, including |
19 | | serving as president of the Kenwood Park Advisory Council, |
20 | | serving as vice president of Planned Parenthood Chicago, |
21 | | creating a community response to gun violence with The It's |
22 | | Time Organization (TITO), and founding the not-for-profit |
23 | | Harriet's Daughters, which operates to educate and empower |
24 | | African American women and businesses while working with |

1 | | elected officials and individuals in leadership positions to |
2 | | spotlight hiring disparities and to enable better access to |
3 | | jobs and procurement opportunities; and
|
4 | | WHEREAS, Ald. King and her husband, Alan King, are the |
5 | | parents of two adult daughters; therefore, be it
|
6 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
7 | | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
8 | | we commend Alderperson Sophia King for her work on the Chicago |
9 | | City Council, and we thank her for her years of dedicated |
10 | | service to the people of the 4th Ward and the City of Chicago; |
11 | | and be it further

12 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
13 | | presented to Ald. King as an expression of our esteem and |
14 | | respect.
