2 | WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that the Illinois General | ||||||
3 | Assembly pays honor and respect to veterans who have served | ||||||
4 | their country and the State of Illinois; and | ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Wilbur E. Troehler was born in the | ||||||
6 | small farming town of Fairbury to parents Grover C. and Aline | ||||||
7 | Troehler on March 3, 1916; he married Ruth M. Urban on February | ||||||
8 | 21, 1941, and they settled in Chicago, where they had three | ||||||
9 | sons, Eugene, William, and Robert; and | ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, SSG Troehler was inducted into the United States | ||||||
11 | Army at Gary, Indiana on March 23, 1943; he received his basic | ||||||
12 | training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and advanced | ||||||
13 | individual training at Camp Breckenridge, Kentucky; upon | ||||||
14 | completion of training, he was assigned to the 75th Infantry | ||||||
15 | Division and further assigned to Company D, 289th Infantry | ||||||
16 | Regiment; the 75th Infantry Division was activated April 15, | ||||||
17 | 1943 and deployed overseas on November 14, 1944; and | ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, SSG Troehler entered combat as a Heavy Weapons | ||||||
19 | NCO and Section Leader under the 75th Infantry Division on | ||||||
20 | Christmas Day 1944 in the Ardennes Counter Offensive, later | ||||||
21 | known as the Battle of the Bulge; and |

1 | WHEREAS, SSG Troehler returned to the U.S. in April 1945 | ||||||
2 | after marching through England, France, Belgium, and | ||||||
3 | Luxemburg; and | ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, SSG Troehler received numerous medals, including | ||||||
5 | the Bronze Star, the American Campaign Medal, the | ||||||
6 | European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the World War | ||||||
7 | II Victory Medal, and the Army Occupation Medal; and | ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, SSG Troehler received the Combat Infantry Badge, | ||||||
9 | the Expert Infantry Badge, and the Expert Marksmanship Badge; | ||||||
10 | he was also given the Honorable Service Lapel Button; and | ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, SSG Troehler passed away on April 13, 1989 in | ||||||
12 | Chicago; therefore, be it | ||||||
13 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
14 | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE | ||||||
15 | SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate U.S. Route 24 as | ||||||
16 | it travels through Fairbury as the "SSG Wilbur E. Troehler | ||||||
17 | Memorial Highway"; and be it further | ||||||
18 | RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation | ||||||
19 | is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with | ||||||
20 | State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs | ||||||
21 | giving notice of the name "SSG Wilbur E. Troehler Memorial |

1 | Highway"; and be it further | ||||||
2 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||
3 | presented to the family of SSG Troehler, the Mayor of | ||||||
4 | Fairbury, and the Secretary of Transportation. |
