2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Samuel E. "Sam" Hill of Geneva, who | ||||||
4 | passed away on July 5, 2022; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Sam Hill was born to Samuel H. and Ruth | ||||||
6 | (Twichell) Hill in Battle Creek, Michigan on November 8, 1935; | ||||||
7 | he grew up in Royal Oak, Michigan; after graduating from high | ||||||
8 | school, he attended Kiski Prep School in Saltsburg, | ||||||
9 | Pennsylvania; he entered the University of Illinois in the | ||||||
10 | fall of 1954, where he played freshman football and was an | ||||||
11 | active member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity; he married Carolyn | ||||||
12 | Snader in August 1959; he earned a degree in Recreation and | ||||||
13 | Park Management from the University of Illinois; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Sam Hill first worked as the superintendent of | ||||||
15 | Recreation in Lincoln; while there, he decided to pursue his | ||||||
16 | master's degree and moved to Champaign to complete his thesis; | ||||||
17 | he then moved with his family to Elmhurst, where he served as | ||||||
18 | superintendent of Recreation; during this time, he also served | ||||||
19 | as the secretary/treasurer of the local Jaycees and was later | ||||||
20 | elected to the position of regional director; and
| ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, Sam Hill made the decision to go into sales/sales | ||||||
22 | management in March 1965, leading to a series of moves, which |

1 | included Madison, Wisconsin, Elmira, New York, and | ||||||
2 | Williamsport, Pennsylvania before he settled with his family | ||||||
3 | in Geneva, Illinois in 1977; he retired from Horton | ||||||
4 | Industries, Inc. in 2001; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Sam Hill was dedicated to serving the City of | ||||||
6 | Geneva; he was a member of the city's plan commission for a | ||||||
7 | decade before running for alderman in 2001; he represented the | ||||||
8 | First Ward for the next 12 years, which included much of the | ||||||
9 | downtown and the Geneva Historic District; he served as the | ||||||
10 | commissioner of the Geneva Park District for eight years, | ||||||
11 | during which he was instrumental in obtaining funding from the | ||||||
12 | State to buy the first 131 acres from Peck Farm in the early | ||||||
13 | 1990s and turn it into a park; for his efforts, a baseball | ||||||
14 | field is named after him at the now-385-acre park; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, After being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, | ||||||
16 | Sam Hill and his wife were instrumental in establishing a | ||||||
17 | Memory Café, where those with the disease and their partners | ||||||
18 | could socialize and discuss issues; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Sam Hill, alongside fellow Alderman Dorothy | ||||||
20 | Flanagan, won the Dancing With the Geneva Stars competition in | ||||||
21 | 2013, raising money for the Geneva Cultural Arts Commission | ||||||
22 | and the Geneva Academic Foundation; he also portrayed Herr | ||||||
23 | Drosselmeyer in State Street Studios' productions of The |

1 | Nutcracker ballet; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Sam Hill attended the Fox Valley Presbyterian | ||||||
3 | Church, where he sang in the church choir for over 40 years; he | ||||||
4 | took part in the Living Waters of the World mission trip to | ||||||
5 | Guatemala to help install water systems; when devastation | ||||||
6 | struck Gulfport, Mississippi in 2006, he went on a mission | ||||||
7 | trip to install new roofs; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Sam Hill loved golfing; in his younger years, he | ||||||
9 | also enjoyed skiing, swimming, and playing racket ball; he was | ||||||
10 | especially fond of taking his grandchildren to concerts, | ||||||
11 | musicals, zoos, and museums and watching their athletic | ||||||
12 | activities; he was an Illini fan and always attended football | ||||||
13 | games in his orange pants and blue Illini shirt; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Sam Hill was preceded in death by his parents and | ||||||
15 | brother-in-law, Jack Snader; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Sam Hill is survived by his wife of 63 years, | ||||||
17 | Carolyn (Snader); his children, Jennifer (Dan Dworzynski) and | ||||||
18 | Jeffrey (Kathy); and his grandchildren, Mackenzie, Tyler, and | ||||||
19 | Justin; his sister, Sue McClenachan; and other family members; | ||||||
20 | therefore, be it

1 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
2 | Samuel E. "Sam" Hill and extend our sincere condolences to his | ||||||
3 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
4 | further
| ||||||
5 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
6 | presented to the family of Sam Hill as an expression of our | ||||||
7 | deepest sympathy.
