2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Patricia Nelson, who passed away on | ||||||
4 | March 5, 2022; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Patricia Nelson was born to Wilbert Sr. and | ||||||
6 | Beulah Mae Jones on July 1, 1948; after her father's passing, | ||||||
7 | her mother married Morris "Big Floyd" Floyd, who developed a | ||||||
8 | special bond with his new daughter; she attended Medill | ||||||
9 | Elementary School and graduated from Flower Vocational High | ||||||
10 | School, where she was involved in many different | ||||||
11 | extracurricular activities, including student council; and | ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Patricia Nelson married Wesley Nelson Jr. on | ||||||
13 | March 14, 1970, and they moved to St. Louis, Missouri, from | ||||||
14 | which they returned to Chicago in 1973; except for her brief | ||||||
15 | moves to California and Missouri, she remained a lifelong | ||||||
16 | resident of Chicago's West Side; and | ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Patricia Nelson worked in various industries and | ||||||
18 | capacities, from banks to Zenith to Ryerson Steel; she spent | ||||||
19 | most of her professional life helping and serving the people | ||||||
20 | of Chicago, specifically its senior citizens, as an employee | ||||||
21 | of the City of Chicago's Sewer Department, where she retired | ||||||
22 | in 2004; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Patricia Nelson doted on her grandchildren and | ||||||
2 | made sure they knew that she loved them with all her heart; she | ||||||
3 | took great pride in keeping her grandchildren, particularly | ||||||
4 | during their formative years, where she would teach them their | ||||||
5 | ABCs and how to count and take them on excursions; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Patricia Nelson enjoyed telling stories about | ||||||
7 | things she had seen and people she had met; she had a keen | ||||||
8 | interest in politics and served as a precinct worker and | ||||||
9 | captain; she was proud of being able to witness the election of | ||||||
10 | the nation's first African American President and Vice | ||||||
11 | President and often spoke proudly of her support of candidates | ||||||
12 | for national office; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Patricia Nelson loved her plants, reading, and | ||||||
14 | watching her favorite television shows, such as Chicago P.D., | ||||||
15 | NCIS, and her all-time favorite, Law & Order; as a youngster, | ||||||
16 | she enjoyed music and dancing; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Patricia Nelson was preceded in death by her | ||||||
18 | parents; her stepfather, Morris Floyd; her sister, Josephine | ||||||
19 | Moore; and her brother, Michael Jones; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Patricia Nelson is survived by her children, | ||||||
21 | Shawn (Marie) and Shivonne (Sen. Elgie) Sims; her |

1 | grandchildren, Kennedy, Sydney, Mackenzie, and Spencer; her | ||||||
2 | brother, Wilbert Jr.; her sisters, Bertha (Charles) Anderson | ||||||
3 | and Dorothy Davis; her stepbrothers, Morris Floyd Jr. and | ||||||
4 | Gregory Floyd; and numerous aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, | ||||||
5 | and friends; therefore, be it

6 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL | ||||||
7 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
8 | Patricia Nelson and extend our sincere condolences to her | ||||||
9 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it | ||||||
10 | further

11 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
12 | presented to the family of Patricia Nelson as an expression of | ||||||
13 | our deepest sympathy.
