2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Dr. Robert "Bob" M. Moriarty, who | ||||||
4 | passed away on April 6, 2021 at the age of 87; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Bob Moriarty was born to James and Mary (Cleary) | ||||||
6 | Moriarty in New York City on October 9, 1933; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Bob Moriarty graduated with a Bachelor of Science | ||||||
8 | degree from Fordham University in 1955; he received a PhD in | ||||||
9 | Organic Chemistry from Princeton University in 1959; he | ||||||
10 | completed postdoctoral research at both the University of | ||||||
11 | Munich and Harvard University; other scholastic | ||||||
12 | accomplishments include fellowships with the Fulbright | ||||||
13 | Program, NIH, and NATO; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Bob Moriarty built a teaching and research career | ||||||
15 | at the University of Illinois at Chicago; his latest title was | ||||||
16 | professor emeritus; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Bob Moriarty was an international expert and | ||||||
18 | leader on the subject of iodine chemistry; this expertise | ||||||
19 | garnered him accolades from the American Chemical Society, | ||||||
20 | including the 2005 Award for Creative Research and | ||||||
21 | Applications of Iodine Chemistry; and

1 | WHEREAS, Outside of academia, Bob Moriarty founded the | ||||||
2 | pharmaceutical research company Steroids LTD in the 1980s; the | ||||||
3 | company was purchased by United Therapeutics; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Bob Moriarty was also a sportsman and automobile | ||||||
5 | enthusiast; he operated a second classroom at GingerMan | ||||||
6 | Raceway in South Haven, Michigan where he taught driving | ||||||
7 | lessons; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Bob Moriarty had a soft spot for rescue dogs; his | ||||||
9 | compassionate kennel included Luke, Andy, Barton, Stetson, | ||||||
10 | Austin, and Emma; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, At the time of his passing, Bob Moriarty resided | ||||||
12 | in Michiana Shores, Indiana; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Bob Moriarty is survived by his wife, Mary; his | ||||||
14 | children, Marie Castellano, Annika (Scott) Bruggeworth, and | ||||||
15 | David Moriarty; his stepchildren, Shelley (John) Rousseau and | ||||||
16 | Jennifer (Jeff) Appenzeller; and his seven grandchildren; | ||||||
17 | therefore, be it

18 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL | ||||||
19 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
20 | Dr. Robert M. Moriarty and extend our sincere condolences to |

1 | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
2 | further
| ||||||
3 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
4 | presented to the family of Bob Moriarty an expression of our | ||||||
