2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened |
3 | | to learn of the death of Ronald Elmer "Ron" Schumacher, Elgin |
4 | | resident and a Dundee-area mainstay, who passed away on |
5 | | November 9, 2019; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, Ron Schumacher was born in Elgin to Elmer Emil |
7 | | Schumacher and Clarice Mueller Schumacher on May 7, 1923; he |
8 | | grew up in a historic home on Second Street in West Dundee; he |
9 | | attended Immanuel Lutheran Church and School as a child; |
10 | | alongside his brother Bob, he was an accomplished marimba |
11 | | player; he graduated as salutatorian from Dundee Community |
12 | | High School in 1941, where he excelled in academics and |
13 | | baseball, and he played center in basketball under Coach |
14 | | Eugene deLacy, who led Dundee High School to its only Illinois |
15 | | State Basketball Championship in 1938; he served as a |
16 | | minesweeper and a chaplain in the U.S. Navy during World War II |
17 | | and was stationed in the Pacific theater; after the war ended |
18 | | in 1945, he returned to and graduated from Northwestern |
19 | | University in Evanston, where he again excelled in academics |
20 | | and basketball and was the starting pitcher on the Wildcats |
21 | | baseball team; and
|
22 | | WHEREAS, Ron Schumacher first worked as a traveling |
23 | | salesman selling kitchen cabinets for the Howell Company; |

1 | | dissatisfied with the constant traveling, he soon started a |
2 | | career in the insurance business with a position at Bankers |
3 | | Life; he quickly moved to Northwestern Mutual Life (NML), |
4 | | where he enjoyed a successful and lucrative 50-year career; |
5 | | during his time at NML, he was a member of the company's |
6 | | million-dollar club for an incredible 34 years in a row; and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, Ron Schumacher was deeply committed to his faith |
8 | | and was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in East Dundee |
9 | | for his entire life; he was a member of the Republican Party; |
10 | | he was always was deeply involved in the community, first in |
11 | | the Dundee-area while his children were growing up and then |
12 | | later in Elgin; he was a board member of several |
13 | | organizations, including the Elgin Chamber of Commerce, the |
14 | | Elgin Rotary Club, the Elgin Kiwanis Club, and the Elgin YMCA; |
15 | | he often volunteered to be a basketball coach and referee |
16 | | during the winter basketball season; and
|
17 | | WHEREAS, Ron Schumacher remained active during his entire |
18 | | adult life; he vacationed with his family in Minnesota and |
19 | | Wisconsin during the summers of the 1960s, and his family's |
20 | | favorite spot was the Shingwauk resort located near Little |
21 | | Pine Lake in Aitkin, Minnesota; he acquired property near |
22 | | Green Lake in the 1970s; he enjoyed playing tennis at the Elgin |
23 | | Country Club, and he played tennis until his mid-eighties when |
24 | | his doctor forced him to stop; and

1 | | WHEREAS, Ron Schumacher was known by many names to his |
2 | | grandchildren, including Grandpa, Grandpa Duck, Grandpa Ron, |
3 | | and Bompa; he will be remembered for his incredibly sharp |
4 | | mind, his dedication to giving his best, his competitive |
5 | | nature, and his quiet, dignified manner; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, Ron Schumacher was preceded in death by his first |
7 | | wife, Ruth Glaser Schumacher; his second wife, Elizabeth |
8 | | "Betty" Bower Schumacher; his son, James Schumacher; his |
9 | | daughter, Jane Schumacher Hawkins; and his great-grandson, |
10 | | Luke Schumacher; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, Ron Schumacher is survived by his brother, Robert |
12 | | Schumacher; his children, Susan Schumacher (formerly Koppen), |
13 | | Robert Schumacher (Jane), and William Schumacher (Karen); his |
14 | | grandchildren, Leslie Schumacher, Brett Koppen, Brian Koppen, |
15 | | Branden Koppen, Matthew Schumacher, Mark Schumacher, Jeremy |
16 | | Hawkins, Jennifer Hawkins, and Jaclyn (Hawkins) Slager; and |
17 | | his great-grandchildren, Blake Koppen, Jackson Schumacher, |
18 | | Audrey Schumacher, Robert Crum, J.J. Crum, and Keoni Hawkins; |
19 | | therefore, be it

20 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL |
21 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
22 | | Ronald Elmer "Ron" Schumacher and extend our sincere |
