SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of James Joseph "Jim" Coryn of Moline,
4who passed away on June 3, 2021; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Jim Coryn was born in Rock Island to J. Ralph and
6Ann (Rink) Coryn on March 20, 1932; he attended Sacred Heart
7School and St. Ambrose Academy, where he participated in
8several sports and earned the prestigious Bechtel Award for
9scholastic and athletic excellence; he attended Notre Dame
10University, where he received, with honors, his Bachelor of
11Science in Finance; he received his law degree (cum laude) in
121956 and passed the Illinois bar; he loved Notre Dame and
13became an active Badin Guild member; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Jim Coryn entered the U.S. Army in 1956; he
15served two years in Korea, and while there, he worked under the
16Judge Advocate and taught business law for the University of
17Maryland; he was separated from service in 1958 and
18transferred to the inactive reserves, receiving an honorable
19discharge in 1962; he married Carol Herrity in May of 1959, and
20she preceded in death in January of 1996; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Jim Coryn joined the Rock Island law firm of
22Sinnett, Rink and Coryn; he remained a partner with the

1succeeding firms, culminating with the firm of Coryn and
2Walker; he was a member of both the Illinois and Iowa Bar
3Associations for over 50 years; he served as president of the
4Rock Island County Bar Association and taught business law at
5Moline Community College; he tried jury cases for the State of
6Illinois Acquisition of Properties for right of way; he also
7represented property owners in eminent domain proceedings in
8Rock Island, Whiteside, and Mercer counties; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Jim Coryn served on the board of directors of
10Metrobank in East Moline; he held memberships in the Rock
11Island County Trial Lawyers Association, where he also served
12as president, the American Jurisprudence Society, the Notre
13Dame Law Alumni Association, where he also served as a
14director, and the Quad City Notre Dame Club; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Jim Coryn married Gloria (Stoudt) Foley in South
16Bend, Indiana in May of 1999; they enjoyed traveling,
17including several trips to Europe; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Jim Coryn was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart
19Church in Moline; he loved to play golf and was a member of the
20Short Hills Country Club for over 30 years; he later joined the
21Rock Island Arsenal Golf Club; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Jim Coryn was preceded in death by his wife,

1Carol; his sons, John and Paul; his parents; and his brothers,
2John "Jack" and Robert Coryn; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Jim Coryn is survived by his wife, Gloria; his
4daughters, Joan Vargas and Lucy (Bill) Bice; his
5grandchildren, Amanda, Adam, and Zachery Coryn and Matthew and
6Allison Bice; his great-grandchildren, Kurt, Isaac, Alexis,
7Zander, and Hudson; his stepchildren, Debra (Jeff) Schuett,
8Lynn Foley Reeh, Michael Foley, and John Foley; his
9step-grandchildren, Lisa Turner, Jordan Reeh, Kelly Beck,
10Katie Payne, Eric Foley, and Amy Sadler; his
11step-great-grandchildren, Rhiannon, Brendan, Natalie, Trevor,
12Aidan, Cameron, Charlotte, and Claire; his sister, Mary (John)
13McGee; and several nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
15ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
16James Joseph "Jim" Coryn and extend our sincere condolences to
17his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
18further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to the family of Jim Coryn as an expression of our
21deepest sympathy.
