| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
| 3 | to learn of the death of Marcos Muņoz, who passed away on May | ||||||
| 4 | 15, 2021; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Marcos Muņoz was born in Cuidad Acuņa, Coahuila, | ||||||
| 6 | Mexico on April 25, 1941; and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, Marcos Muņoz crossed the border at the age of 13 | ||||||
| 8 | to look for work to help feed his family; he was hired to feed | ||||||
| 9 | farm animals and had to sleep in a barn; after six months, when | ||||||
| 10 | he tried to obtain his $3 a day salary, he was instead | ||||||
| 11 | deported; as an adult, he worked the migrant trail from Texas, | ||||||
| 12 | to Colorado, to Arizona, to California, and to Washington | ||||||
| 13 | State; after his time working with the United Farm Workers, he | ||||||
| 14 | became a Steel Worker for 11 years; he then worked at Cook | ||||||
| 15 | County Hospital as manager of supplies and linen before his | ||||||
| 16 | retirement; and
| ||||||
| 17 | WHEREAS, In 1965, Marcos Muņoz met Cesar Chavez and went | ||||||
| 18 | on strike with the United Farm Workers; he successfully led | ||||||
| 19 | the grape boycott in Boston from 1968 to 1971; he helped | ||||||
| 20 | establish the ranch committees in Arvin/Lemont after the first | ||||||
| 21 | contracts were signed in 1970; he was the East Coast Boycott | ||||||
| 22 | Coordinator from 1971 to 1972 and then was sent to Chicago as | ||||||

| |||||||
| 1 | the Midwest Boycott Coordinator from 1972 to 1975; and
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, Since settling in the Little Village community of | ||||||
| 3 | Chicago, Marcos Muņoz has been an important activist; he | ||||||
| 4 | helped to organize block clubs throughout the neighborhood, | ||||||
| 5 | worked to elect representatives from the community, fought | ||||||
| 6 | alongside his neighbors to build strong neighborhood schools, | ||||||
| 7 | and worked to establish a family medicine primary care clinic | ||||||
| 8 | that provides care, including dental, to all without regard to | ||||||
| 9 | insurance coverage; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, Marcos Muņoz is survived by his wife, Andrea | ||||||
| 11 | O'Malley Muņoz; his daughter, Maria; his grandson, Anthony | ||||||
| 12 | Thompson (Montenay Thomas); and his great-grandson, Zion Omega | ||||||
| 13 | Thompson; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 14 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL | ||||||
| 15 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
| 16 | Marcos Muņoz and extend our sincere condolences to his family, | ||||||
| 17 | friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further
| ||||||
| 18 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 19 | presented to the family of Marcos Muņoz as an expression of our | ||||||
| 20 | deepest sympathy.
