SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Genetic counselors empower patients and their
3families with vital healthcare information, guidance and
4emotional support to help them understand their family
5history, evaluate genetic testing options, and make informed
6choices based on test results; and
 
7    WHEREAS, There are over 150 certified genetic counselors
8in Illinois working in prenatal, fertility, pediatrics,
9metabolic, cardiovascular, neurology, and cancer care; there
10are 5,000 genetic counselors across the country; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Many people benefit from increased genetic
12sequencing research and genetic counseling, including anyone
13with a condition linked to a specific gene or with a family
14history of an inherited disease or anyone who is considering
15genetic testing; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Genetic counselors streamline the healthcare
17industry by ensuring the right tests are being ordered,
18avoiding costly and unnecessary costs and tests, helping
19patients and providers to understand complex test results and
20how to best use this information, helping consult potential
21parents on the intimidating potential of passing on inherited
22diseases, sharing information with family members, and

1providing recommendations for community support services;
2therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
4ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that the Illinois House of
5Representatives recognizes that the sequencing of the human
6genome is one of the most significant scientific
7accomplishments of the past hundred years and expresses
8support for genetic counselors who are using this research to
9improve the lives of many throughout the state; and be it
10further
 
11    RESOLVED, That we declare November 4, 2021 as Genetic
12Counselor Awareness Day in the State of Illinois.
